Everyone jump on me if I'm wrong.  I'm under the impression that the early buffalo hunters used cross sticks and set up a long way from the herd.  That way, when they shot, the herd would mill around the dead or wounded one and not run off, not knowing where the danger was.  Useing that tactic, they could take many animals before the herd moved out of range.  I would think they would have to be shooting well over 200 yards with open sights and black powder.

I agree with learning to shoot your rifle in any position, but I wouldn't pass on any available rest.  The object is to make a clean, humane kill and not to see how well one can shoot offhand.  You can practice that on the range.

Im a hunter used to be a shooter but old eye's cost you money.

Both.  I started out as just a hunter.  A bird hunter, then went to ducks and geese.  Then noticed that the swamps I was hunting had deeer browsing the edges, so I started carrying a couple of buckshot for targets of opportunity.  Then I bought a rifle.  Then they started requiring steel shot, so I quit hunting ducks and geese.  I've never bought any steel shot.

But, the deer were still browsing the edges of the swamp, so I bought another rifle, then my boys came along and I bought some more rifles.

I spend lots of time shooting, and I spend lots of time hunting.  Now, the grandkids are pestering me about hunting, so I'm still buying rifles.

I can think of lots of worst ways to spend my money.

Both and I hunt most anything that wears fur and some things with feathers. 8)

Hummmmm, tough question... :-\

I'm a hunter, but I shoot a lot more at the range then in the field.  Mostly working up hunting loads for which ever weapon is in that years rotation.

But I want to shoot some more hi-power matches..., and the BPCR shoots look like a fun workout for my 45-120..., and I'm getting a new gunbelt for my SAA'a and we got this real neat town at my gun club for CAS...   :P

I dunno... maybe I'm a hunter who likes to shoot... or a shooter who likes to hunt...  :-[ ???

Best not be jumpin on ya Pete, I agree fully with you. I have tried to shoot bottles filled with water standing freehand with 223 and 22 Hornet at different ranges and I am not very good at it. Very unsteady. I am practicing that a little now. The deer I shot a couple years ago was a quick standing shot and wasn't a perfect hit. Deer piled up against a fence and I had to shoot again. I always use anything around to make a steadier shot. I know I will have more hits. I think snipers rarely shoot freehand if they don't have to.
Thanks alot AtlLaw, now I'll be up all night wondering the same thing.
