44 mag bullet?
« on: September 07, 2009, 05:59:57 PM »
Anyone shoot these in 44 mag Handi? I was told I can crimp between the cannelure grooves. I have to check to see how long my chamber is. The top groove wouldn't allow enough room for powder and the bottom (if chamber is long enough) wouldn't allow much bullet seating. Hope I don't have to get a 444 to use these. They look and feel NASTY!

Woops! just compaired them with 200 & 240 xtps and I should be able to crimp on top groove. Maybe depending on which powder.
Anyone tried them and how'd they do?

You really don't have to crimp in a single shot and yes they shoot pretty good in my 444 marlin, don't know about the handi rifle as the speed will be a bit less.

I'm trying something different. I don't resize my brass after firing in my Handi. Just load and crimp a little to keep the bullet laying on the powder. Prob. the wrong thing to try. I think I would want a slight crimp even if I resized. When you put a new cart. in the chamber it moves around a bit more than my fire formed loads. Prob. no benifit in accuracy? I'll try it for a while and see.
This would prob. be a good bullet in the 444. Thanks

I suspect your accuracy would be better if you'd properly size the case in spite of what sounds like good theory. You have less consistency that way as compared to sizing which will hurt accuracy more thana wee bit of slop. The bullet I believe is intended to be crimped in the top cannelure for use in lever guns. You could get by with the lower one in a single shot most likely. I do agree crimping generally isn't required in rifles but the powders normally used in the .44 mag and .444 really work better with a firm crimp and a sized and tight fitting case to bullet fit.

While a firm grip on the bullet is needed, the back groove should be OK if you full length resize and give it at least a shallow crimp. I do not generally crimp for single shot rifles, but some times I get better consistancy if I do crimp. You will just have to try it to find out. With a short barreled gun or a repeater I alway crimp. I have some of those bullets and I seat them to the back groove for my Handi Rifles, but in the front for my revolvers and lever gun. I always full length resize straight walled cases. I would only partial size a case, but I can not get good enough consistancy to suit me. Good Luck and Good Shooting
