Factory H&R in .357 Maximum
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:24:58 AM »
I'm fairly new to the forums and yes I searched the FAQ.  Came across an H&R rifle in .357 MAximum at a local gun show.  It appears as new and is factory marked .357 Maximum.  Has a laminated stock and open sights.  Hence, a low comb stock.  I'm interested in buying it but would need a scope on it.   Recently bought the Handi in .45-70 w/open sights.
Can anyone give me some info re the .357 Maximum???  I can buy it for $300.  Thanks in advance.

Buy It!  ;D Thats my advise to you. Sounds like it might just be one of the original factory ones.

But regarding the Max, do a search not just in the FAQs but in the entire NEF/H&R Centerfire Rifles forum, there is a ton of info on it.
I do not have a Max, but LOTs of guys around here do so you will be getting some good info soon.
Welcome abord.

I agree - BUY IT NOW, if it is not too late. I love mine, but it was a 357 that I reamed to Max, I sure would like to have one that was factory. Not that mine shoots bad, I would just like to have a factory original.

Is the technical reason you can shoot 38sp, 357mag, 360dw and 357max all from a 357max chamber because the cases are straight walled? No shoulder? It seems logical to me, but I have not had my head in this "shooting" space for very long.

Yes, that is the reason. Straight walled cases like the 357 head spaces off the rim, not a shoulder or mouth of the case. The short cases just have more "jump" to the lands, but does not seem to hurt accuracy, at least in the 357 bore. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I meant to ask if any of you shoot Handies with scopes and the low comb stocks?  Seems ackward.  I changed the butt stock on my .45-70  for that very reason.  The .357Maximum I am interested in has the low comb laminated stock.  With my eyes I need a scope but would not want to buy a laminated stock.  Thanks.

You just have to try it. I have a 44 mag that has the straight Syn. stock and doesn't seem to be a problem. I was worried about that at first also. There are other ways around it but....  You better go get it. How long that gun show last???

I hate to admit it but the gun show ended yesterday.   I know, I know.  This is the 2nd gun show I've looked at it.
About 2 yrs ago I began looking at a Sako Classic in .30-06.  Number 2 son had to have my first one.  Didn't really need the '06.  Looked at it every month for 5-6 months 'til they finally came down on their price to a reasonable level.  That rifle was meant for Me!  ::)
We'll see if that Handi in .357 Maximum is meant for me.

You must be a great fisherman. I did the same thing with a Browning 222 with a camo syn stock. Not that fond of the Browning bolt but waited way tooooo long and it was gone. She was small and very sweet feeling. I know now it WAS meant for me. If it's been there for two shows there must be something wrong with it or that gun show is in a very rich neighborhood. If it was me I'd be rubbing on it right now. Good Luck on the next show.

Sure, it just depends on how it fits you, mounting the scope low makes a big difference, if the scope allows it to be mounted low or you modify the hammer so it can be mounted low, the low comb will probably work fine, mounted in high or extra high rings as many mount them in won't help.  I have a few scoped H&Rs with low combs, I shoot scopes only with very few exceptions, old eyes.  ::) Pic below is my 30-30AI with Nikon Prostafff 2-7x32 shotgun scope in medium Burris Signature Zee rings.

canon6, what kind of scope base is on your rifle? It looks to be longer than usual.

The Ultra rail is an inch longer, see the pic in the FAQs, unfortunately it's no longer made.  :'(

My Compact Light Weight Hornet had no comb. I bought a black synthetic add-on comb for $8.99 from Combat Hunting. Drilled a couple of pilot holes in the top of the stock, used some good metal self-tapping screws, does the job nicely. Cheaper than a new stock. You can Velcro the comb if you like.

You can also put some padding under a cartridge holder like on Doug's 30-30.  Think I heard of using a mouse pad if ya didn't want to buy something to do it.  DP

This is my .22 LR VersaPak barrel mounted on the frame and laminated stock that once was home to my factory 357 Max (which I foolishly sold for some long forgotten reason). No problem using the scope. Also check my avatar pic, scoped 30/30 Topper. Both have low mounted scopes and straight stocks as you see.
