Today at the range, using the Handi 270. Everything going great. Another gentleman wanted to go down range, so I started to clear my rifle. Problem: the unfired,yes unfired round would not extract. I tried it two or three times. Didn't extract. I took a cleaning rod and tried to push it out from the muzzle. It would not release from the chamber, so i bumped it four or five times with the butt of my hand. Didn't release. By this time I figered I had pushed the round into the case, so I didn't want to fire it because of higher pressure. So now I am at home with a round stuck in the chamber. Please tell me how I can remove this live round from the chamber.

Try a ¼" dowel or different jag, maybe the rod tip/jag isn't pushing on the bullet tip, but on the ogive jamming against the bore. I'd remove the barrel first tho. Is it an extractor or ejector barrel? If it's an extractor, it sounds like the cam or cross pin broke/bent, the extractor post may have broken too, but I've not seen that happen.....yet that I can't remember anyway.

Tim It's an extractor. I have tried the 1/4 dowell, but it just seemed to stick on the ballistic tip, then hard to pull out. I have had a stuck case before but never a live round. Would you think a steel 1/4 inch rod would work. I'm certain that something bent or broke.

Steel rod would be even better! That's really unusual it's stuck that bad, I've had one stuck 500S&W case that apparently I didin't remove the cast bullet lube from the case that stuck really bad, but the extractor still pushed it out after I finally broke the barrel over my leg to get the action open, then still had to use pliers to removed the case the rest of the way.

Stick the barrel in the freezer, the steel and brass will contract at different rates and hopefully loosen it up. Same thing is done with heat, but probably not with a live one in 'er

Pour some penetrating oil down the barrel and let it sit for some time. Then set the barrel in a bucket.

Even if the tip is pushing into the dowel rod I still bed if you whack it, it'll come out. A steel rod is gonna scratch the barrel. Hurts me to think about it even.

Not if he's careful, I've used a ¼" stainless rod for years without any problems, it just takes a little common sense and care, it's not like he's cleaning with it either, running a bullet thru the bore at 65kpsi causes more wear!!

Shazam Shazam Went to Loews Picked up a 1/4 in steel rod. Took the dremmel and rounded the edges off,so as not the marr the bbl. A couple of small wacks and out she came. Put a few cases in the chamber and she is working fine. Doesn't seem to be any scratches on the stuck case nor any damage to the bore or chamber. I can't explain it. but I did have some concern. Tim I got your PM. Thanks for your willingness to help. You guy's on this forum are the greatest. I'm glad I got to be a member of this family. I don't guess that anything is broken or bent.

I got a 1/4" brass rod I use for that purpose. It goes to the range every time I go and in the pickup when hunting. Its saved a go back home trip a few times. Zeak

Jim...let me take a guess at what happened. Is there any possible way that a case fired in another gun could have gotten into your gun without going through the FL sizing die? When I first got my .223 I stuck an unloaded once fired case from a friends AR in there to see how the extractor worked and it stuck. I had to pop it out with a wooden dowel and a strong blow from a 2lb hammer.

The only other things I can think of are either an extremly over length case (do you trim?) or a bullet of a larger diameter loaded by mistake. (probably would have been apparent during seating)

Of course if you weren't shooting handloads then all of my theories are out the door.

Chipmonk I was shooting reloads. I do full length size and do trim each and every time. Probable don"t need to trim after each shot. But I do. Been doing it for many years. I have no possible idea what caused this to happen. Never had this problem to occur and hope it never happens again. The chamber was completely dry as was the case. It seems to be functioning well with empty cases, both sized and unsized. Don't have an answer, but she is working fine niot. By the way that 270 loves those comb tech 130 gr bullets with 44 gr of varget. I have an old Tasco Euro Class 4x12 30mm scope and they certainly are compatable with one another. It shoots better than I can shoot.

By the way Chip. I have the synthetic stock and forearm on this one. I picked up some no. 83 rubber o-rings from Lowes [plbg dept} and put 3 of these on the barrel lug. Put the 1/4 in set screw in the bbl forearm lug and snugged it down. The o=ring fills the void in the forearm. It really do work on a couple of mine and the grandson's 243.

I was having trouble with stuck brasss in one of my handi, went to a welding supply
got 36" brass welding rod about .2" in dia. works great in 22 cal and up. not in 204.

A little trick for badly stuck loaded rounds .

1) Remove the barrel

2) Pour about a shot glass full of 10W30 motor oil down the bore

3) Place a tight patch on a cleaning rod and run it down till it contacts the oil

4) Give it a firm rap or two with your hand

Rounds just pop out , its the same idea as a hydrolic jack , even pressure over the whole bullet and no metal to metal contact .

Jim - I'm just never content to leave a potential problem. Even if it doesn't ever happen again, I would have to figure out what did it. I'm just that way. Let me know if you ever find a cause.

Oh and thanks for the info on the o-ring. That's actually the exact trick I came up with other then I used a home depot instead of lowes! I haven't been able to do good accuracy testing due to the lack of 45/70 ammo in the area but I will try someday.

have you tried the formally stuck round again? There should be atleast some markings where it was tight? Just curious.

Don There were no marks on it. After I got it out. I pulled the bullet, inspected it and then resized it. I really didn't want to put it the chamber again. It's really weird, because every round functions flawless now. Sized brass and also a live round. Maybe there was a piece of whatever around the case neck or something. I just don"t know. I will try it again soon.

I picked up a 3/16" by 3' long brass rod from Lowe's, cut off enough to make a punch for disassembling a receiver for a trigger job, and use the remaining length to drive out stuck brass in the chamber. The weight of the rod alone dropping on the brass usually sends the shell flying out. I leave it in my hard case that I use to transport my handis from the safe to the range so I always have it when needed. A valuable and "handi" tool.

The 22 Hornet has stuck a few cases before today, and I just have a cleaning rod with handle and no brush or other attachment. Yes, just the weight of the rod dropping does the trick. First time it happened at the range, we used an old coat hangar to avoid a 40 mile round-trip back home...talk about feeling really bad about scratching the bore. As jagged and rusty as it was, left no signs of barrel damage. Polished up the chamber a bit and reduced most of the sticks, I think I will have it licked by finally setting on a medium pressure load and hopefully that will prevent it in the future. The rod travels in the Hornet's gun case 100% of the time. I want to reduce stuck cases to zero so there is no problem when I finally get to hunt with it. I can't think of what I'd have to endure form hunting buddies if I have to take a cleaning rod on a hunt to knock out stuck cases!

I've only had a few stuck cases, usually from too hot a load, or not wiping the the chamber out after cleaning. Most aren't stuck very much, it doesn't take much to unstick them, a short brass rod dropped down the barrel will knock the case out, I've even had em eject all by themselves whilst I was retrieving a rod!! Short of converting to a factory extractor, the easiest way to get stuck brass out is with Fred's ejector notch which is simple to do, then all you need to do is flick it out with the tip of your pocket knife.

Believe me Tim. I was strongly considering Fred's idea when this took place the ONLY thing that I can come up with, is what you said about some oil left after cleaning. If it happens again, Fred's idea will be the next move as you suggested. I have assured myself, it ain't agonna happen again.
