Handi won't eject....help!

just traded for a 270 barrel...it fits fine.  maybe a bit on the snug side...but latch engages alright.  now here's my issue...using factory rem cor-lokt ammo the cases will not eject.  when I load the shell...it does not catch at all on the ejector. when I don't open the barrel all the way I can get them to catch, but the ejector still sticks after being closed and opened again.  any help appreciated...

The part about the shell just falling into the chamber is right, the ejector or extractor jumps over the rim when you close the action.  When you open it the shell should either fly out if it is an ejector type or be lifted up if it is an extractor type.  Exactly how does yours act?  Larry

I had the same problem with my 30-06. I took the ejector mechanism apart, and polished up the rough surfaces a bit. Then I read the FAQ's  :D and saw Tim's suggestion to add a BB to lengthen the spring a bit. I didn't have a BB, but I did have a small socket head cap screw that had a head the same diameter as the spring, so I polished the threads off that, and reassembled the parts. It seems to work fine now, but I haven't tried any heavy loads in it yet.

it is an ejector barrel..the shell just sticks. ejector stays under the rim of the shell.  tried drying out the chamber...didnt work. seems like the spring isn't strong enough or the shell is stickin too bad

There are suggestions in  the FAQ's for polishing the chamber, that seems to usually help.  A stiffer spring can work, but usually it is fixable by a good polishing job.  This is the problem that led H&R to go to extractor type barrels.  Larry

well looks like I need to do some chamber polishing.  to add to the problem though...on certain shells that I put in the chamber, the ejector actually does "pop out", but still misses the rim of the brass.  is this part of the same problem?

I've done some polishing of the chamber...cases still either sticking, or the ejector seems to miss the rim of the case.  I read about putting a BB behind the spring which pushes the ejector outward, but can the same be done to the spring which provides upward pressure on the ejector?  I'll continue to polish the chamber, but then it looks like I will be taking the thing apart...

You and jjvw need to compare notes, you're both going down the same path, but he learned the lift button is missing which could be the same problem with yours.

Just took it apart and its there.  It is the small part which is on the spring providing the upward tension, correct?

After polishing the chamber even more with no luck, I decided to go with the suggestions in the FAQ's.  After honing and placing a BB in line with the spring, the cases are still sticking.  I don't really care if the barrel is ejector or extractor..I just want it to work.  If i convert what I have to an extractor, will it really make a difference?  The person I traded for the barrel has offered to buy it back as he hadn't had any problems with it...   ???  I don't really want to do that because that will then leave me to send the frame to the factory to have another barrel fitted.  Would H&R send me the parts to make it into an extractor, or convert it if I sent the barrel to them?

If all parts are there, the lift button spring may be weak and need to be replaced if the ejector claw is missing the rim, most good hardware stores have a selection of springs of similar diameter which could be cut to the right length. H&R won't convert an ejector to extractor, that's covered in the FAQs, requires machining the underlug to accept the extractor cam, you can do it yourself if you have a drill press or a mill.

Would grinding off the step to make it a spring extractor help?  It is mostly just sticking, occasionally missing the rim...Sounds like I might have two problems.....

Removing the step just makes it a spring powered extractor that makes you remove the case from the chamber manually, doesn't nothing to prevent sticking brass. A factory extractor uses the leverage of the action opening to force the case out of the chamber just enough to pluck it out with your fingers.

That's what I thought.  The main problem seems to be cases sticking....after having already added the BB in the main spring and polishing the chamber...what would be the next step?  More polishing?  Seems odd because the previous owner used the same factory ammo and didn't have any problems...guess I'm just that lucky... >:(

Well I think I may have exercised my demons...haha.  After sitting and pondering for a while, I came to the conclusion that it had to be something simple that was causing the issues.  I realized that most of my chamber polishing efforts were concentrated on the area of the chamber closest to the rim.  I used the power drill method mentioned in the FAQ's...but that limited me to only one portion of the chamber.  I decided to do some more hand polishing in the neck region of the chamber...and by God I think I've done it.  Thanks for all the help....

ps...now that I have the BB in there...the empties could be flying clear to the next county....

Thanks to all who contributed, this has given me the notion that what little chamber polishing I did on my Hornet was by hand and did not include the neck region. Will give it a try as soon as I can.

It certainly pays off to read topics that may be of only passing interest. I will keep reading all new topics and their posts, every day.
