Hodgdon Universal in the Venerable 45-70 Gov't
« on: August 29, 2009, 06:07:32 PM »
Well, I finally got my 45-70 barrel (it's in the mail anyways) so I stopped by my local Cabelas today to pick up some reloading supplies among other things.  I've now got W-W cases, 300 gr Hornady HP's, and RCBS dies.  I didn't pick up any powder though in an effort to keep the total to a minimum (my wife was with).  I've got a few powders on hand from the 45 Colt and 308 WIN.  It looks like my IMR 3031 is going to work pretty well, I've got a bunch of BL-C(2) which appears to be a bit too slow, and I've got some Univeral Clays.  I've seen a bunch of data for Unique in the 45-70 and Universal is very similar in all aspects.  So, what is the consensus of using Univeral in the 45-70?

I can't find any load Data on Universal for the 45-70. Being a Pistol Powder I would presume it was useful for Cast bullets only if at all, similar to Unique.

My main concern is that he is thinking to use jacketed bullets with these types of powder.

What I know about the Universal Powder
it would NOT be good for 45-70.
I am using IMR 4198 in my 45-70

You are incorrect.  There is Clays, International Clays, and Universal Clays; they all go by their prefix.  Check data.hodgdon.com.

I've got IMR 3031 for regular shooting with jacketed bullets, that part is covered.  But I was thinking about letting my 10 y/o neighbor hunt with it this fall and wanted a "cowboy" load for it so it didn't tear his skinny little arm off.  I've seen plenty of loads out there using ~12 gr Unique in the 45-70 using cast boolets.  Univeral is almost identical to Unique, but not a direct substitute.

I'm just looking to see if anyone has tried it.

I don't have any of those powders, however I can recommend for low recoil loads IMR 4198 for jacketed bullets, 2400 or Blue Dot for Cast bullets.
