is something going on?
« on: August 29, 2009, 03:53:16 PM »
well I have decided I need another 20 gauge barrel for a project gun. I had posted a wtb for a 22" modified 20 gauge barrel but after thinking it over I decided to get the cheapest 20 gauge barrel I can find, any length, any choke, and cut it to my desired length and have a cylinder bore. I was going to post another wtb but thought I would check the used gun section on line at Kittery Trading Post in Maine. I could just pick up an inexpensive used 20 gauge H&R or NEF, use the barrel for my needs and mount one of my extra shotgun barrels on the frame. Good so far. I checked KTP used guns online and NO used H&R's and only one used NEF, a 12 gauge. KTP used to have 8 to 10 used shotguns and rifles by H&R and about the same number by NEF at any given time. What gives I wonder? few used guns around?....<><....:)

I was in a local gunshop today and commented that his used stock was down.  The owner said people are buying but they are not trading in or selling outright to him like they used to.

It's true in all the shops, no stock and high prices.  Last time I was in Walmart the NEF 20gauge shotgun was $119.00 so that is less than most gun shops want for used ones they have.  I also saw a new .22 lr NEF youth for $99.00 in a real gun shop.  Larry

Used 12s are the easiest to get. Used 20s one of the toughest.

I made the gun shop rounds yesterday here in CT and came up with exactly that.. a 20Ga partner up @ Cabela's in E. Hartford!!  It was on the clearance table with a price I could not believe!!!! This place usually has used partners for 150$  :o :o :o  So finding this one, on the clearance rack no less, for this price was unbelievable. I also snagged a factory hammer ext, still in factory bag, for a buck!!!

I agree with you though, used guns in general where few and far between. One good thing was altho it was picked over, there was a fair amount and a better than before selection of loading components available. One place had a FULL SHELF (hundreds of bricks)of cci primers. Along with a big sign, two bricks max per customers. " Sold in brick lots only" Do not open the boxes. Brass prices wither out of this world!!  An example, 100 pcs of 45-70 was over $70 bucks!!!! Most powders where $25 and up a pound. I didn't see the primer costs, but my Buddie Jim mentioned that they where "up there".

I've noticed the same thing here in NH. 20's are tough to come by. I usually see a few 12's around but rarely a 20 gauge. I did see one nice 20 recently at Riley's in Hooksett. It was an older Topper 88 in 20 gauge MOD in good shape. They wanted $135 I think.

Not seeing much used stuff in IN. Gradually seeing more loaded ammo which there was none of a month ago. Still very little components. Can't wait till the supply gets back up and the prices go back DOWN! HA!

I believe the online list of guns at Kittery Trading Post lists hundreds of guns in stock ready for delivery. That they don't have many or maybe any NEFs most likely just means they don't care to cater to that market.

IMHO kitttery trading post is trying to be LLbean south. (not that far south) once upon a time LLbean was one fine store, now its more like green party hq.  sadly ive been watching ktp going the same way for 20 yrs or so.  ya got to fight through tee shrits, hats, and sandals just to get to the gun shop
Everything before BUT is B.S.

GB, Kittery usually has a fair number of new H&R/NEF's and amost always between 8-10 used H&R's and about the same number of used NEF's. I try to stop by there on the way north to my camp and again on the way south back home. Their stock changes daily but I have NEVER seen this few used H&R/NEF's (a combined total of ONE!!!)...

bluecow, you are correct and I agree on both LL Bean and KTP. LL Beans started going downhill and catering the the greens when they rebuilt after the fire. Much the same with KTP, when they "expanded", they, like LL Beans, began turning into  just another department store. Although KTP still does have a decent gun section, it is not as nice as it was before it was expanded and "improved"....<><....:)

by the way, for anyone heading north, there is a GREAT sporting goods shop for hunters, trappers, and fisherman in Medway Maine, just off the interstate. It is Two Rivers Canoe/Sporting goods and run by Barry, a former Helicopter piolt in Viet Nam. He and his wife Nancy, a great person herself, are friendly and knowledgable and they have a great selection of new and used guns, and many H&R/NEF's. I make a stop ther a requirment of any trip north. Anyone that is entering Baxter State Park from the south goes by their place, as well as anyone heading north on the "Golden Road". If you stop in tell them I said hello.......<><....:)

With gun prices and demand going up and personal income going down it is natural for people to be forced to the low end of the supply, so the cheaper H&R's and Rossies are gone just because it is all that a lot of people can afford.  Larry

Was in N.H. and Maine from 8-13 to 8-17. Checked KTP on line tuesday night before I left and they had a 20ga USH with bushnell 2 1/2x on it for $185 and I had a $25 off coupon only to get there on friday afternoon and it had already sold. The clerk I spoke with said you should have called and put a 7 day hold on it. Wish I had known on tuesday that i could have done that. Oh well I got my 30-30 instead! The only used H&R I saw there was a 450 Marlin with laminated stocks for $225, i wanted my 30-30 more.

Just this morning the Big 5 sporting goods ad has .410, 20ga and 12 ga you're choice $119.00 which is not much more than a beat up Handi in the paun shops now.  A year ago you could get used ones for $69.00 most any place you went.  Larry
