I bought a box of Garrett 540 grain cartridges for my .45/70 Guide Gun. They are amazing. Randy Garrett has taken both the .44 magnum and the .45/70 caliber to new heights.

Do they have small rifle primers?

I believe a guy I knew used Garrett to take the big five in Africa.  I would imagine their website would show that if it is true.

Garrett uses small rifle primers in their brass to prevent chain fires.  I have quite a few thay I haven't reloaded yet.  I was wondering if anyone had.

What is so amazing about them?  Velocity?  Accuracy?  Recoil?  Cost?

Go read up on his site, he'll show you how his 540 grain hammerheads performed vs. some "better" african cartridges.  Articles on MEPLATS, Impact effect, penetration vs. the 458s as well.  Lots of good stuff

I have a box or I should say part of a box now of the 540 grainers.
His loading is nothing magical really but they are good cartridges.
I have a cast bullet that I flat point that weighs 550 gr that when loaded in nickle brass looks almost identical to the Garrets.
His will break 1500 in my 22 inch Marlin and mine will too.  Accuracy is so close that it is the same.
I use RL 7 and also H4198. My OAL is the same as his.
I get roughly 30 fps less with the H4198 load but I like the "Extreme" aspect of the Hodgdon line of extruded powders.
Mine cost a whole lot less and bullet hardness and ductility seem so close that it should be a non-issue.
But,  then again what do I know?
I do know this though that even though it drops a lot at 200 yards the sound of it hitting the backboard is very distinct and accuracy is very good.
But I regress.  What do I know?

Swapgass, you crack me up. You ask a question, then answer it yourself, wrongly nonetheless.

They use large rifle primers on all 45-70 ammo except for the exiter ammo because of the smallish point.

EFREMTAGS:     before you get too cracked they use small rifle on ALL 45/70 ammo now.
My 540 gr Garrettes have them.
