barrel lockup question
« on: August 28, 2009, 10:08:59 AM »
Just picked up a new handi in .35 Whelen the other day.  Out of curiosity, I swapped barrels with my 45-70.  The .35 barrel locked up perfectly on the .45 frame.  The 45-70 barrel locked up pretty well on the .35 frame but has just a tiny bit of side to side play.  It doesn't rattle or anything but if you grab the fame and the barrel you can feel just a little slack.  My question is, is any play acceptable?  I don't plan on using them this way but would like to know if I could.  The .35 Whelen, by the way, is one of the new ones form Van's Sporting Goods in central Ms.  Took it to the range Tuesday.  I only had time to load 7 rounds for it using a 200gr Hornady Interlock and 55grs of Varget.  Fired only one 3 shot group at 100yds and it measured .72in.  Not a thorough test, but a very promising start.

.72"? Excellent. If it were me, I would consider load development done, unless of course, you are after prairie dogs at 400 yards?

Usually accuracy will suffer when a barrel is loose, H&R would replace the barrel if it was factory fitted.

Congrats on the new 35 Whelen, and good shootin too.  ;)

Thanks, that is the answer I expected.  I'll just leave it on the original frame.  Got a hundred rounds of brass coming next week.  Can't wait to get back to the range to do some real testing.  Hopefully that first group wasn't a fluke.  If it wasn't then my load development is probably done.  Now, if we just had some prairie dogs here in Ms!
