Are the deer around you armor plated? ;D

As long as you know your load/rifle and the shots are under 100yds I don't see an issue.  I took a Blackbuck doe last year right at 100yds with a .44Mag Win94 and it was plenty.  I'd have no problem using the Special under the same conditions provided I put the same amount of time into practicing with it.

44special is fine.  Used 180gr JHP's and 24XTP's.

Watch your range.

Probably a hardcast would be better.

The special 44 is plenty for deer if ranges are kept with in responsible distances.

I agree with tykempster, wide me-plat hard cast bullets are my first preference with handgun calibers used on big game. I never like to use any hollow point on game. They are designed to limit penetration, this is fine for the unwanted visitor in the middle of the nite, but have no place in the hunting woods and fields.

Last fall I built a short break barrel carbine in 44 spl, with only a week or to to shoot it before leaving for deer camp.  I had some Hornady 240 XTP bullets that I use to use out of a muzzleloader so I loaded some up with a load of 18.2 grs. of H 110 and they shot very accurate. I did not get to chronograph them but I would think they would do 1200 FPS + out of a 18" barrel.  I shot a nice mature whitetail doe at about 40 yards broadside and she made 1 hop forward at the shot and went down, then my friends dad wanted to use it and he shot a nice 9 pt. at about 80 yards with the deer quartering away. That deer went about 30 yards and went down. The shot on my doe went thru the chest with no problem, the shot on the buck went thru the lungs and was just under the skin in the front shoulder on the exit side. We dug that bullet out and it was the perfect picture of a expanded bullet that did it's intended job and stayed intact.
I have seen this bullet fail before, the 240 XTP when shot out of muzzleloaders at max powder charges at close range where the bullet hit bone and went to pieces. So to answer your question I will say the same as the others did in that the 44 spl at close range is fine , if you don't handload I would not use any of the factory loaded HP's as they are loaded for handgun velocity and not intended for medium game use.

Not 44spec but I've used a 44-40 lever action with 200gr jacketed softnose hollow points at around 50 yds on a mature doe.  She stood there pumping out of both sides with a double lung  pass thru for a few seconds took a step a fell down dead.
Another went straight down with a neck shot at about same range or slightly farther.  Didn't Elmer down a number of deer with his 44 spec...lead bullets as I recall.  I dont worry...know your range and hit where it counts!

40-50 yards is about all I would do with a 44 special.....use a 44 magnum.

As far as the cast lead bullets, thats all I'm using now.  My old .44 barrel was an overbore (.432) and accuracy was very spotty.  Got a .357 barrel for our "Primitive season" only to learn that the bore has to be .38 or larger, not .357, to qualify.  So back to the .44 overbore barrel.  The only way to get accuracy out of it was with with .432 or .433 lead.  So thats what I'm going to do this primitive season.  .44 Spl should be fine with the same set up but normal bore (.429 or .430 for lead).  Good luck.

Midwayraider, I think you will find the .44 Special is very adequate for deer hunting. I use a 245 SWC bullet cast out of wheel weights at about 850fps & it's never let me down. Good luck!
