Hunting success!
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:16:35 AM »
Just got back from an antelope hunt here in Nevada. 30.06 handi made a perfect heart/ lung shot at around 250 yds. I was worried, as I haven't been getting the best groups, I think due to a warm barrel. My Handi .357 got a coyote at about 150 yds, and dropped in it's tracks. Hopefully post pics tomorrow....

The .357's were 158 gr. SJSP out of the .357 I bought here (not reamed to max). It shoots these bullets 3/4" at 100 yds. I LOVE THIS GUN!! He was a small yote and it wouldn't have dropped any faster if hit with the 30.06. Just a loud "WHACK", and dropped in his tracks.

The 30.06 was 150 silvertips. Not my first choice, but the best group I could get from store-bought... Hopefully I'll have pics of both today.

With the right load, and shooting from a cold barrel, the 30-06 Handi is readily capable of 500 yard shots.  On something thin skinned like antelope, it can be stretched on out to 700 with work, and the right bullet.

I never shoot more than 3 shots, then let the barrel cool.  When hunting it is always the first shot from a cold barrel that counts.  The only time my 06 sees the bench is when it is in need of having a new scope sighted in.  For practice, and plinking, at the bench I shoot something else.  Or I take three Handi s and alternate them.

My favorite bullets are the 165gr Nosler Ballistic tip or the 165gr Nosler partition.  And the Sierria 165gr HPBT.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
