No, I'm not plinking it.  I have an exterminator coming in the morning before dawn to take care of it.

Best idea anyone had was the professional.

Having said that... I'm a tightwad.  I'd have sprayed them with poison.  For wasps I've used bleach (not bad), bug poison (works), simple green (not a good idea), and the wasp spray (not perfect) before.  We used to wad up some newspaper and snare it into a frog gig and light it when I was a kid.  With lots of peach and apricot trees, that was a cheap and effective way to kill yellow jackets.  I've danced around with a propane torch, too.

HOWEVER, I've never confronted a hornet's nest before, merely yellow jackets and dirt daubers.  After all this reading, I'll be using something strong if the need arises.  That story about having them bounce off the door window is some scary stuff.  :o  I will NOT use a shotgun or rifle.  Thanks, y'all, for some interesting stories.

The nest make a great patch for round ball. Used to be popular way back when.  It was easier to find than cloth for poor people. 8)

That's a good choice you made Pete, if you're allergic to insect stings, you have no business trying to exterminate them yourself.  I've yet to have a reaction to them, got stung 7 times on the head once by bald hornets, they'd made a nest above the shop door that I was unaware of, opened the door one morning when I was gonna hitch up the boat for a fishin trip, I made the trip, but the first thing I did when I got home was spray those buggers, kilt em dead, then burned the nest best I could with kerosene in a barrel. Did the same thing to a yellow jacket nest one night several months later, it was on the other end of the shop over the big door, neighbors on the alley pointed the 3lb coffee can sized nest out to me,  that was a bit scary since it was near the peak of the roof under the eave, but the hornet/wasp spray did it's job in two nights, there were a few still alive the morning after the first spraying, but the second spraying made em all dead.

The bad thing about insect stings is you may not be allergic to them your whole life, then you will be all of a sudden after the next sting, that happened to Jack, my huntin/fishin partner, he almost died from anaphylactic shock, fortunately he and his wife figured it out soon enough. Ever since then he keeps a bee kit handy. I keep an Epi-Pen and Benadryl capsules in the car just in case one of us ever needs it, all I had to do was ask my doctor and he prescribed the Epi-Pen for me.

Bob makes a good point, I have a couple paper bags full of it left over from my buckskinnin days, it works great for wadding in muzzleloading shotguns too.

I'm glad to see that this thread finally came to it's senses. Hornets are nothing to mess around with. If you have to get rid of a nest, instant annihilation by chemical or incendiary means is the only way. "Stirring up a hornet's nest" is not a figure of speech for nothing. You notice in the YouTube video the idiot that hit the nest with a stick is pretty young. That's because there are no old guys alive who still hit hornet's nests with sticks !

However, in the humorous and tongue-in-cheek vein of the original post, if you do want to shoot it, just put a Tannerite exploding target on it first. Well, no, actually first you should call 911, put the target on it, and then shoot it... ;D

If it's hanging, go at night and do not use a light. If you can take a large gearbage bag and encase the nest in it. Then insert spray nozzle through the bag and spray.
Jim

I'd use his suggestion and save my handi's for larger varmits and game..;-)

I can't help you with the nest on chimney hornets but I've developed a special way of getting rid of the big black ones that live in the ground. First I removed almost all my clothes then I just sat on the opening to the nest. Then, when the first ones bit my @$$ I jumped straight up 16'. By the time I hit the ground running I have the whole wasp Quick Response Team (The Wasp 300) suckered into attaching themselves to me, mostly trying to go up my nose for some reason. At that point I make a beeline for the nearest body of water, dive in and drown them. They don't drown that easy so you have to swim about a mile underwater to finish 'em off. This method does involve a trip to the ER, but it sure is tough on those wasps too. It also helps to have a few freinds there to pick up the strays.

I pioneered this technique before video cameras were available, only Super 8, which we didn't have. With a little imagination this method could be adapted to the chimney nest and videoed by a new generation of wasp killers. The key elements are; being stripped down to skivvies(fools the wasps into thinking you're just going for a little dip), then enticing them to attach themselves to you. At that point you've got 'em. Plan ahead, know which way is the nearest body of water.

The saga is over.  The guy came at dawn, 40 degrees, and sprayed the nest with a can of Ortho foam.  Nothing has flown from or to the nest all day.  The foam covered the nest completely from 20 feet away.  Some tried to get out, but dropped to the ground immediately.  It's good stuff.  I'll take the nest down tomorrow, and it'll still make a fine target.

Making assumptions that hornet nests hold no more live hornets is about as smart as the original plan to shoot the nest. Make no such assumptions burn that sucker.

I think you need to make it blow up somehow.  Maybe another thread for such a task?

Since no one responded to Gendoc and my posts regarding the use of C4 on the nest perhaps a pound of black powder would work for removing all traces of the nest and any pesky critters left inside (larvae and such) ;D Under safe conditions of course! Perhaps ATLLAW could render some idea as to how to properly ignite such a contraption.

Just yesterday I got rid of a hornets nest, about 10" in diameter.
I used a special foam made for the purpose.

The  can has a smal tube attached and it can spray a foam stream up to 2 meters.

You first cover the entrance with foam so they can't come out.
Then you stick the tube through the foam into the nest and fill the nest inside with foam. Game over.

I did it at dark with a flash light toke down the nest next morning
and put it in the fire pit.

Using any kind of fire arm is not wise. Most of them insects would get away.

Not me!  The only non-design use I ever put C4 to was to light it with a match and use it to heat my C rations.  ;D  Burns real hot...  ::)
