won't eject
« on: August 25, 2009, 03:29:56 AM »
I have a 243 with about 100 rds thru it. Today I was sighting it in for a backup for a pistol hunt in wy.
A shell slipped by the ejector. When it fired it popped open. Now it misses the rim just about every time and won't close.
Doesn't look broken but is worn.    Can these be easily replaced? with an extractor? Who has parts?

See the info in the FAQs on ejector to extractor conversion, it can be converted to factory extractor with parts from H&R or using the existing ejector, but requires the underlug to be modified, they're different.

I looked there after I posted and the conversion is more than I wanted to to. I was just tired of chasing my brass and thought if I had to replace it, I would if it was easy.
My real problem is why the ejector is missing the rim. I can see it being pushed down by the rim as I close it.
Now the ejector is sticking, even after removing the shell.

Sounds like you need to do a little cleaning and possibly replace some parts, see the ejector tune info in the same section, it's either gummed up or the lifter spring is defective, you can do a simple ejector to spring extractor if you don't want to chase brass by removing the step from the ejector claw, that's listed as a permanent conversion in the FAQs.

Ok- I polished the camber, honed ejector, ground off the ejector so it extracts. Fired factory ammo no longer sticks.
Added a .177 BB to the small spring. That caused it to seize, wouldn't move at all. Moved BB to large spring, now the ejector misses the rim.
Needs some pressure under the front. It easily deflects away from rim.
Now what!

See the pic of the parts in the FAQs, the lift button and spring need to be in working order, if the spring is weak or either part is missing, it won't work.

lift button? is there a button on top of the little spring. Mine sits on a seat with a small hole. It doesnt touch the ejector.

See the FAQs pic, with the barrel upsidedown, the button is under the spring in the hole against the ejector.

thanks  I don't have one.  I can't see it very well on my small laptop screen. They have to come from H&R?

You can make one from a nail or maybe order it from H&R, maybe you can convince H&R to send it free which they might, it's part number R00461, they may no longer carry it since they only make extractor barrels now and the shotguns and rimfire which are still ejector don't require it.  ;) Brownell's no longer carries it, nor does Numrich. The lift button dimensions are .170" long, the head is .026" thick and .209" wide, and the shank is .121" in diameter.

I think it is, but it's buried in a related thread, I've made them before and others have too, I bought a 221 Fireball barrel(from a hornet) earlier this year that had a homemade lift button in it, so I know others have done it too.  ;)
