My first Savage
« on: August 24, 2009, 02:57:00 PM »
I have heard that Savage rifles are accurate for their low purchase price.  I find that to be untrue!  I bought a slightly used Model 111 chambered in 270Win, it has a Boyd's laminated stock and a Timney trigger and is in 98%+ condition.  It still has the Weaver style base and I put some low Millet rings and a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 scope on it.   My first range session was using some hand loads with 140 grain PRVI Partisan boattail bullets over H4831SC and some with H1000.  My best group was with 63 grains of H1000, which is a compressed load, which shot three rounds into one slightly ragged hole at 100 yds off of a solid bench.  This load showed around 2950 ft/sec with the chronograph set about 10' from the muzzle.   I will put this rifle's accuracy up for comparison to rifles costing much more money!   The only negative thing I have found with it is somebody has messed with the blind mag box and it jams the third round out of the line-up but have a new box on the way from Brownell's.   I just had to brag on this splendid firearm.   A big two thumbs up for Savage Arms Co.

My son-in-law has a Savage in 270 Win. Neither of us reload for this caliber, so recently I bought 7 boxes of different factory ammo to see what it shot best. This rifle shot all but 1 of the factory ammo into tight groups at 100 yards. Talk about accurate and versatile.

Savage/Stevens rifles are surprisingly easy to get small groups with. What I really like about them is they are so easy to work on; from getting and exchanging parts to changing barrels. While a lower end Savage/Stevens gun is cheaper than say a Remington, you will not find that to be the case when you get into the higher line of Savages. They will cost you about the same as a comparable Remington. Unless you get into the single shot actions or the F Class actions, they are the same from the lowly Stevens up through the expensive rifles. The difference is the metal finish and things like stocks, trigger guards, bolt handles. So you can take the cheapest Savage and dress it up, but you are getting more expense. The bottom line is, they shoot well or you can get them to shoot well with out a lot of hassle. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I have 3 Savage rifles.  One is over 50 years old (actually a Stevens).  One is about 16 years old.  One is about 3 weeks old.  They all have one thing in common.  They shoot fabulous and they were all cheap for what they are.  My 50+ year old Stevens 15-A single shot .22 is about as accurate as any .22 I've ever shot.  I've owned it 30 years or so.  My dad owned it for 10 years before that.  And my neighbor owned it from it's build date in the early 50's.  You can't mount a scope on it at all or I would be shooting it in competitions.  I see these rifles selling for $50 or less sometimes.  Not bad for a rifle that shoots that well.

I have a 110 in .30-06 that was made in 1983.  It's prior to the AccuTrigger of course but it will shoot one hole groups at 100 yards with factory loads (it likes Core Lokts).  I paid $225 for it used and I got a month's warranty and a cheap scope (Tasco) I ended up selling for $25.

I just bought a MkIIFV a few weeks ago.  I put a Nikon ProStaff 3-9X40 scope on it and it is a tack driver.  I paid $239 for it which was a little high but not really bad for a bull barrel gun.  A regular barrel MkII is much cheaper.  It came with Weaver mounts built on to the rifle.  I've been shooting blades of grass in two from 50 yards with it.  I can't do it every time but I can do it pretty often.  I hit 8 in a row one time.

So Savage is 3 for 3 for me.  I thought about buying a CZ when I bought the MkIIFV but I don't know how they could shoot much better than a Savage.

I have had many Savage's and the only problem I ever had was on a mod. 10 .243 from Wal-Mart. The tapped scope mount holes where not set right, so after some tinkering and a set of Weaver windage adjustable rings all was at peace with the gun gods again. Wal-Mart guns are are as good as the next for factory guns as they get. Savage would not sell them to wally world if they were not the cost of shipping them back and forth for warranty repair would kill them in the end. Bottom line walmart sell good guns not factory seconds like the urban legend goes.
