Ok, I had to look up the term coonass. I couldn't recall ever hearing that before.

Doesn't have to be "real mex" to taste good.  Too many think that unless it is "real mex" or "real italian" or "real whatever", it's not good.  Americans have a way of taking something and making it BETTER.   ;)

I love Boudin, oysters, and crawfish, ranks right up there with a good veal marsala or Chicago deep dish, I'm torn between anything out of the South or Italian.

I live in Chicago and can't stand deep dish pizza. Stuffed or thin crust for me.

I lived in the northern Illinios/greater Chicago area for 20 years and alos did not like stuffed or deep dish. I always liked the super skinny crunchy crust pizza.

There nothing like Southern Cooking.

Chicken fried steak or venison, smashed taters with white gravy, green beans, onion, sweat tea and peach cobbler.

Fried chicken, fried taters, red beans or purple hulls, turnip greens, crystal pepper sauce, onion, corn bread, sweat tea and nanner puddin.

Deep fried catfish or crappie, home made fries, hush puppies, cucumber slaw, onion, sweat tea and home made ice cream.

Yes mam there ain't nuthin better.

I live in Louisiana and the word COON ASS can be used as an insult. If you are not from here don't use it unless you are cajun. Either word has to be earned not given away!!  I must agree that Cajun Is The best. It is not just pepper it is seasoning. Like my old uncle Don says. God supplies the meat but MAMA makes the gravy. CAJUN RULES NOT CREOLE!!!  Real cajun food came from acadiana not New Orleans. A real Cajun  doesn't like New Orleans food!!!

Well as some may know I'm full blood cajun so I'm prejudiced! But cajun aint ethnic to me its what I know and grew up on. I do like chinese its close to cajun with the rice and sauces and all. but when i was in Hawaii I started eating sushi and sashimi and i gotta say i like it! grew up eating raw oysters and when the crew brought me up a plate of fresh caught Ahi(yellow fin tuna) I had to try it cause it was a test by them for the haoli Capt! Well long story short i liked it and still eat it when i can! But  you know us cajuns we'll eat anything!   ;D

That's my problem... I can't pick!  I honestly can't say that if I had to pick one type of "ethnic" food to live on forever, which one it would be.  I've been to a lot of places and had good meals everywhere.  Seen some stuff on other folks plates that I wouldn't touch unless it was life or death.  I love having pot-lucks at the office.  We have Brazilian, Puerto Rican, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Phillipino, Southern, German, and one chick from New England.  We throw down some serious good food to sample.  When I was at NATO, we had English, Scottish, French, Italian, Spanish, Portugese, Dutch, German, American and probably one or two I forgot in my section.  When we would have a "dinner" the food was always outstanding.  One of the church's that I used to go to had about 9 different African countries represented but we met in a Korean Presbyterian church in the evenings.  So when we had a dinner... the food could get pretty wild and tasty but it was all good.  It's an absolute wonder that I don't weigh 500 pounds...  My wife won't hardly eat if it ain't meat and taters but I'm just not picky at all.  I figure if they are willing to bring it to share with friends and co-workers to eat it must be something "special" and it won't be bad.

The first time I heard that "coons rear end" expression I was in Texas.  I expected a fist fight, or possible gun play right there and then.
I was informed by several people including some from the great State of Louisiana that this was not an insult as long as  you use the two words as one. Nothing was said to me that it could only be used by those people you consider authorized to use it. If I offended, it was out of ignorance to the restriction on my part. :-*

Thanks. I appreciated that. I am retired. Messed up back in Salt Mine. Worked with a lot of out of state people and that is how the words were used. I consder it a word used wrong is just like N----r to a black man!!!!  I am a true Cajun from south Louisiana where the word originated. It all depends how it is used and by whom!

Sorry I got upset. Please forgive me.

Hard question for me - I like lots of them :).

Japanese would probably be my choice - I love me some sushi.  Seaweed salad is good too.

Thai is also very, very good.  Particularly Thai fried rice which is generally much spicier and flavorful than most other variants.

Then I'd say Mexican (traditional Mexican  - a taco should be on a soft corn tortilla with cilantro and onions - none of that hard shell lettuce and cheese Americanized stuff :)).

After that Indian is pretty decent.  Very, very different tasting.  People say it's spicy, which is true, but I don't find that they use many HOT spices - just lots of different and odd tasting spices.  Makes for an interesting mix though.

Greek and Italian tie after that.  I like them ok when I'm in the mood for them, but it's only an occasional thing for me.

I'm about bummed on Chinese food though.  I'll have the occasional bowl of hot and sour soup but most local Chinese places just make too many fatty and fried dishes to cater to the local market.

My personal traditional/ethnic food would be regular southern cooking, which I also enjoy in moderation, but I've been trying to cut back on it too as a lot of it is also very high in fat content.  Some good okra & butter beans on rice is awesome though :).

Still wanting to try Brazilian though.  There was one Brazilian restaurant around here that I'd been meaning to go to for months.  Finally decided to go with some friends one weekend and got to the door to discover it had closed 2 weeks earlier. :(  I'm about to take a business trip to Atlanta though so I might try and find a Brazilian restaurant while I'm down there :).

I trucked , and fished in LA. for years with folks that lived there, none off them had a problem with it, of course we worked together, played together and maybe
they weren't as touchy as some. I don't remember anyone mentioning New Orleans.

American!  Real American food encompasses all that lawful immigrants have brought with them over the past 232 years and shared!  Especiallyfood cooked by those Americans who never got the opportunity to "dial one for English"  but who learned how to communicate with everybody else anyway, while helping to build and defend our country.

Now if cuisine includes beverage, I am sure most here will agree an American version of an old German standbye is number one, BEER. How can we have a discussion about cuisine without adding the beverage that is consumed with the meal? I cannot think of any of the before mentioned foods that beer is not excellent with.
