Author Topic: To many rifles to hunt with! (Read 992 times)

Some how or other I'm up to 9 long guns, 2 BP rifles and 1 handgun to use this season.

And a good bit of the reason for that problem rests right here in this forum!

Handi's keep appearing and want to be taken hunting.

Ol' CWLongshot finished grinding down the Limbsaver pad on the (shortened) stock for my 45-120 and it is on the way back to me. Since I REALLY want to shoot a deer with that cartridge, I guess I'll put the barrel and stock back on the old action I used for load development initially; at least for this season.

Of course that leaves me without a barrel for the 38-55 action, except for the ... 38-55 barrel!

So, rather then just let it sit there, and since I somehow managed to acquire dies and componants for a caliber (barrel) I wasn't going to keep, and since a .400 throater is on the way from 4-D Reamers as we speak, what the heck... $:-\$

And last night I put together my 25-06! What 25-06 you say!?

Well, there was an action for sale here at a real good price... and a 25-06 barrel at about the same time... sooooo...

Now, low and behold, and not so suppriseingly, they lock up perfectly together!

I put the wood from my old 45-70 on it along with a scope, and now she's hollerin' "shoot me! shoot me!" fortunately 25-06 dies, brass and bullets have magicly appeared also...

That leaves my poor old 7x57. Shamefully ignored except for the mounting of a real pretty laminated thumbhole stock that I have yet to chop the required inch or so off of! Poor thing, I've had her for some time and she has been patiently waiting her turn...

Now, with all these Handi's jumping up and down begging to be used, what are my 3 bolt guns and 2 lever guns going to do!?

After all I promised some of them a long time ago that we would hunt together this year...

I cannot eat 10 + deer... $:-\$ Not even our small South Jawja types... So it looks like some of them rifle-guns are going to be disappointed.

At least the RSB Bisley Hunter won't be whineing and complaining... she'll be riding along with me whenever I go out!

But as far as the others go, somebody's got to be left out!

Oh well, what the heck... no time to worry about that, bow season opens in a couple a weeks!

It sounds as if you have a real problem!!!! Why don't I send you my address and some shipping labels and you can send a couple of them up to West Virginia and I'll see if I can make time to show them the attention that they deserve!!!

Glad to hear it! Hope you enjoy that one! Now that I have thinned my flock a bit, my favorites are getting more of the attention they deserve. Not to say there isn't room for a few more later on down the road.

DIES FOR 25-06! Dies are not necessary. Mines shoots into A hole at 50 with factory Remington ...pretty cheap when I last purchased...but that was pre-obama...
But I know what you mean. I still have a 45 410 barrel I promised would take some game with the .454-74R cartridge setup. PLUS 45-120. My sons.243(experimental for youths) 45LC and a encore 260 just begging to be pointed a fur!

Richard, I've got the same problem.........but it's not yet half the problem Tim has. Ya just gotta get yer guts up and tell em "No, it's not your turn this year." Last count, I had like 13 deer rifles. I think DNR would be a mite pissed if I took one with each. That doesn't count bows, crossbows, muzzleloaders, handguns and shotguns. Those would probably double the count. Add to that violating with rimfires, and they'd really be ticked off. Oh well, such is life in an overpopulated gun cabinet.

Atlaw, While you have so many nice rifles, and you mentioned you could not eat all the deer you could take, have you considered giving the meat to folks in the community?

?

My girl friend does not care for wild game, so as a result, my neighbors have a wind fall of meat. One of my former students just informed me her freezer was empty, and she could use and nice fat elk . Game never goes to waste here. Even when my wife was alive, we gave tons of meat to folks around town. With the current situation in our country, I would think many would be happy to have fresh meat .

Then you can legally shoot all the deer the law allows and keep your guns happy.

But they must also learn, they don't get what they want all the time either. I have a model 70 .30-06 that I have had for 15 years or more and it has never had a shell in the chamber. $:-\$ Such is life.

The coyote hunter is right. Last trip to Texas out of six hogs total we kept less than 80 pounds of sausage for four of us but we filled a food pantry in northern Arizona with pork when we got back. Texas doesn't seem to want the hogs, we got our hunt, we kept some sausage, hungry people got fed and our wives think it's a good idea to go do it again. that comes out win,win,win,win,win. and this time I get to take along a new 45-70 handi. This does not mean I intend to leave the 357 mag winchester at home all by itself.

all my rifles have names for this reason only. put the names in a hat and pick one!!!! thats how my old 308 came back out of the safe same witht the 280 but they will all take a back seat to my 257 roberts if i get her done befor deer season.

good luck to you, just remember to take the ones that dont get pick on a yote hunt after deer season so they dont get mad, handis have a hell of a temper you dont want to get them mad at you

Well you could take a couple weeks off work and invite me down to camp and I could......no wait that wouldn't work as I have at least that many rifles setting around waiting to be used as well. Hey I've just accept it as fact that some of mine might not get used. Such is life. Heck I've not been deer hunting but about three times in the last four or five years so mine all feel like they are being ignored.

Never have that problem.
The 45-70 Handy always goes along with a 12ga and what ever gun I used last and didn't get wiped down before it was put back.
Last year it was the 35W and the 7x57.
This year may be 38-55 and the 500 or 454 or 445.
The 45-70 & 12ga always goes regardsless!!!
There's always room for the 270wsm for the really long shots.
Don't have the 45-120 ready yet.
Just picked up a 50cal Pro Hunter barrel so the Huntsman may have to wait this year.
Opps, just remembered, this year BP season is 2 weeks instead of 1.
Plenty of time for the Huntsman!
Good thing we eat lots of meet.
I mostly take the little ones so there is always room for one more.

OH the problems of addictive handi ownership......

Many of us are so afflicted, self included.... I get to use one or two different calibers a year, some have been on many hunts and never brought home the bacon. My 30-30 hasn't dropped a deer but its got a couple coyotes under its belt, My 500 works wonderfully, but not for me, my pop and Buddie both took deer with her. Same story for my 20USH and 44mag. Been in on many a hunt and never had the opportunity to deliver. My 307 and 454 are on the cusp of their first season. My 243, 208, 12USH, 357 maxi, 12 Tracker II, 45 Colt, 25-06 and 280 all worked wonderfully. the maxi and 12 USH have many many deer to their credit, most all bang flops.

Generally, I pick a caliber and use that predominantly. Being in a shotgun state, (RIFLES ONLY ON PRIVATE LAND.) one of the USH's ALWAYS gets the nod. Trouble is the 12 is SO MUCH more accurate and I haven't been to the range enough to work with the 20 till it shoots as well.

My suggestion, PICK ONE OR TWO AND CHANGE UP NEXT YEAR.. WORKS FOR ME!!

Got my loads worked up for my B C 45-70. Got new loads worked up for my 243. Got a passel for my 357 based on 360 and max. brass. Ready for deer. Got my new muzzie ready. Can't shoot any of them until my shoulder heals. The Doc says don't shoot, even off my other shoulder?!! I've got a Blackhawk thats been ignored the last few years.........

atlaw, my usual plan is to not use any rifle on two animals in a row. I usually try to give rifles a try I haven't used on game. This fall I plan to open my season with my .25-35 for a whitetail doe hunt. Then who knows. I would like to try an antelope with one of my S & W 44's. Hopefully, my .300 H & H will be ready and I can try it on deer or elk. I don't always follow this plan, but it is a start.

I know, It's rough trying to pick. I tend to change out depending on what kind of country I'm heading into. Got some been here several years and ain't been picked yet. Why don't ya send that pretty little 7X57 gal up north to meet all my 7mm family

. She would enjoy meetin' the little 7-30 Waters girl and the 7mm-08 as well as the 280. That would give ya a good reason to come on up to Montana in 2-3 years to pick her up.

Atllaw - where in sout Jawja do you hunt? We have a very large lease outside of Waycross and all year long we hunt. Stick to the legal seasons for deer and turkeys, but dem dare piggies need culling year round.

I routinely have more pork than I need and wrap it and give it to families in need. I would bet a true test of that 45/120 artillery shell would be on a big 300+ lb feral boar.

Our piggies deers and gobblin birds have learned how to not only coexist but thrive in our area. One t'ing fo sho - once dem piggies set up shop you ain't never gonna be rid of dem all de way. So best be loadin up a bunch of dem artillery shells.....

Richard, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has to cut an inch off every rifle he buys! Sounds like you are doing well, good for you! I just brought a 7-08 Whitetail Unlimited home with me. Instead of shortening the wood, I think I will just remove the recoil pad and put a standard buttplate on it to get her shortened. I would hate to cut that lazer engraved stock! 44 Man
