.500 barrel profile?
« on: August 19, 2009, 01:31:30 PM »
Is the barrel on the .500 S&W Handi any heavier than say the .30-30 Handi? It appears that both take the same forend, but I am curious about the muzzle diameter, specifically whether or not it is the same between the two.

I have been thinking (uh-oh) 'bout fitting a walnut Gunstocks Inc Mannlicher forend and buttstock (with recoil pad!) to a .500 to add a bit of weight. Not sure if the Gunstocks Mannlicher forend will be big enough to fit to the .500 at the muzzle.

I used to shoot a .50-70 Sharps carbine quite a bit, and was thinking about just loading the .500 with Holy Black and cast slugs for a sort of modern take on the .50 Government.

Too far out? I have no real need for .500 S&W ballistics and recoil in a Handi, but thought it would make a very nice, comfortable short range deer popper with black powder.

There is a Ruger No. One 450/400 3" in the safe, so I have horsepower on tap around here if it is needed!  :P

ALL modern H&R forends have the same barrel channel except some of the shotgun forends, the 500S&W barrel is a lot bigger at the muzzle than the 30-30, but at the forend there isn't much difference, that's why all forend channels are the same.  ;) GSI stocks come unfinished, you have to finish the barrel channel anyway.

Thanks Tim,

I have the forend in hand and know that it will need to be fitted. What I need is the muzzle diameter of a .500 to see if there is enough "meat" in the forend to open up to the barrel and have more than toothpicks left!

Don't know if you have ever seen Gunstocks Mannlicher forend (I am willing to bet you have though), but it has a schnobble tip and is really quite dainty.

No, I don't have one, but I have an original H&R mannlicher forend tho. Muzzle diameter of the .500 is ~.900", mine is .891", the H&R mannlicher fits it fine, it's 1.145" wide at the tip and has .547" wood under it at the muzzle . Muzzle diameters are listed in the FAQs, btw ;)

Whoops,

I missed muzzle diameters apparently! Sorry for that.

Hmmm, I have been missing my .50-70, and this will perform in a very similar manner when loaded with black powder.

Dang, another project gun!   ::)

Puhleeze, don't encourage me!  :D

I am a 45 minute drive from Wayne York. I keep telling myself that I won't have a .22 Hornet barrel rebored (or stubbed) and rechambered to 7.62x25 to go along with my CZ-52, nosireebob. But the flesh is weak............weak I tell you.
