i have a buddy looking for a air rifle he wants to spend around 200. what kind is recommended

It really depends a lot on what your buddy wants to do with the gun.   Targets or hunting? Short range or long?  Indoors or out?  Shoots a lot or very little?  

For me, paper punching in the basement, a little outside target shooting and occasional grouse hunting, I  love my Beeman R7 in .177.  But its really too light for grouse.  I'm looking around for a hotter shooting .22 cal gun at the right price.  When I was shopping some experienced air gunners recommended the BSA Supersport too.  I was warned off the Chinese and most Spanish air rifles (Gamo and some cheaper Beeman and RWS guns) for erratic quality and often poor durability.  This always starts an argument but I'm really pleased with the German made R7 - very fun to shoot and very accurate.

Really need more information.  What does your friend want to do with it?  Hunting?  Targets?  Plinking?  If it's target work with a little varmint shooting or pest control then a .177 caliber will work just fine.  If he wants to hunt small  game more then targets then a .22 caliber is a better choice.  In springer rifles he can get a Winchester 1000X for under $100.00.  Or a RWS 34 for under $200.00.  In a pump he would be better served with a Sheridan and still keep it under the $200.00 limit you stated.  It really all depends on what he wants to do with it.  Lawdog

i am pretty sure hunt small game and birds in a out of city limit neighborhood. a few houses around. honestly they dont complain about 22 or centerfire, but it never hurts to be quiet when you can. he will probably also shoot some target

on RWS airguns. Look under the RWS Demos these are reconditioned gund with a new gun warrenty. Best bet if a RWS is to be your first airgun. Prices are also excellent. Calibers are mostly 177 but occosionally a 22 model shows up. a beginner is usually better off with a 177 anyway. Pellets are cheaper and you can shoot more.
  Second choice is a BSA SuperSport from Precision sales usually about $200 and one of the best guns out there in thie price rangs and better than many above it as well . The BSA comes in 177 or 22 and some have been imported in 25 caliber.
