357 Max superlight ??
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:42:11 PM »
Ive got a 357 max t hat I cut down
to 17 inches. with a straight gripped stock it makes fore a nice little carbine. The only thing I dont like about it is  the barrel is too thick. It looks like a  bull barrel. Now what Im thinking is , could I take this barrel to a machine shop,  have them put it on a lathe & take it down to a standard contour. I think it would take some weight off it plus it would look better. What are your thoughts. & how much do you think it would cost
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I'd ask Larry....if ya haven't already!!  ;) It might make the muzzle open up even more and make it a poor shooter tho too, that's what happens when they turn them after boring and rifling, and why all H&Rs are a bit more open at the muzzle by about .0005".

You are right about that Tim. On the other hand, once they start shipping hammer forged barrels, the opposite will happen. Nice way to get a little choke in the barrel. Turning relieves the stress put in the barrels by the button rifling process, and since that is on the inside of the barrel, it opens up when turned. I wouldn't bet my life's savings on it, but my guess is that it has probably opened as far as it's going to.

Just curious, how much does your rifle weigh now with the barrel cut down? My dream Handi would be a .357 Superlight that weighed less than 6 lbs.

I bet I could flute it with a ball end mill, run a few ~12" flutes leaving a couple inches at the muzzle end untouched. I'd want to get Larry's input on that tho. ;)

More food for thought.....  Machine it into the triangle configuration with the radius corners like Remington uses on some of it rifles now.

Now you guys got me thinking  :D

Me too!
I have a Youth Synthetic stock set and an SB2 reciever sitting in a cabinet just waiting for a .357 barrel.
I guess that barrel isn't going to walk up and knock on my door, so I may have to send off to Ilion.
Not crazy about the "clean barrel" thing though.

I thought about that too but you could use a WGRS peep sight in the scope mount holes and have the barrel drilled and tapped for a Williams shorty ramp with firesight in the front after the barrel is cut down. I wonder if Ilion has .357 barrels in stock  ;)

I've had three .357 barrels and they all were shooters.  I'd almost bet you could cut the barrel in half and it would still shoot.  Accuracy problems are gonna be with the sights or the pilot.  If you get unhappy about the groups, change sights...............or find out how to knock off 20 years ;)

Probably get sent to the FAQs for this but here goes. I ran across three different new 357 sb1 clean barrels last week at three different shops. I thought and must have been wrong but the barrels looked a lot smaller than the 44 mag barrels. I thought they were same diameter with smaller bore. They almost looked like superlight barrels to me. Needing an excuse to go back anyways. Didn't hit me on the first one, something seemed a bit off on the second one, and the third I said LET ME SEE THAT. Wasn't interested cause of sb1 but it sure seemed a lot different to me. If I ever get a barrel and it is that slender, I'll be happy.

And turn it ugly!  >:(

The New Remington Triangular barrels are pretty stiff from all the reports I have heard... and are very good shooters.
And they are VERY light.. I would be more than happy to tote around one of these come hunting seson with the right scope. Plus it would just be cool to have a Handi with one  8)
