Handgunning Varmits
« on: August 11, 2009, 03:36:47 PM »
;) For the last few wks. I have been shooting my prairie dogs with my revolvers. Mostly Smiths in 357 and .44. However both are loaded with rather mild loads. Today I shot 6 dogs with 2 different revolvers. I did notice the .44 with a 210 grain Rem. Hollow pt. skip across the prairie after I missed a shot at a prairie pup at 30 yards. I would guess it flew 200 yards before hitting the dusty prairie. :o :( >:(   Anyway I made my best shots of the summer so far. With the 44 4" mountain gun, I knocked off a big fat dog at 62 yards. I think it was the second or third shot. Later, I hit one at 95 yards with the Highway Patrolman and a 140 grain Rem. Hollow Point. Even at that distance it expanded. ::) Luck was with me today, and against those to dogs!!!!! ;)

;)  :) Plinker, nice pistol and chuck.  ;)  I enjoy shooting varmits with my pistols. The numbers of p. dogs are down for what ever reason. So those that remain are targets for my pistols. I get lots of shooting, but not many dogs. When I do hit one at longer range it is a surprise.  :o But it sure is fun. I usually shoot a little each day. Yesterday, got only one with the Smith and .357 loads.
Also got a few rockchucks this year with my pistols, the .357, 44's, and even a couple with my .45 autos.  :D Keep shootn'  :D ;) :)

I have shot ground squirrels with my T/C in 223.  Worked well.
Sounds like fun with the revolvers.  May have to give that a try.

:D Mc. it is a lot of fun. this am got 2 with my 4" mt.gun in 44. Both were close, I usually trade off the next day and use a diff. revolver. Mostly it is away to burn powder at difficult targets. :D ;D

I used to clean rabbits out of the garden with 22 CB caps in my Ruger Bisley for my old landlord.
that was fun.  Lots of running shots,  Lots of "Crud!"  flip of the thumb abd a quick second, third and smoetimes 4th shot at it as it tried to make it to the bushes.
But that did not have the splatter effect of the 223 on the ground squirrles or I am guessing the 357 or 44 on the p dogs.

;) I usually don't load my pistols hot, so the splatter effect is minimal.  :-\ But used my .223 on a couple, they did splatter :o Right now I am shooting some old Speer 146 grain in .38's in my 357, they are pretty tough. The Rem. 140's hpt. do a real number on all varmits. :D ;D
