as a followup, a couple things:  the animal is a rabbit   :o

I was checking out those guns in preparation for a hog hunt that me and my friend are going on.  I got mine last night, and didn't use either gun. I used a 260 and put a 140 core loct through the hogs head.   I got real lucky, the hog turned out to be a female ( YES! ) and has some great tasting meat.  It was a wild hunt, the landowner told me the pigs were coming in at 2200 as revealed by the camera next to the feeder. well, it was a full moon, no problem right?  It was so dark I could not see anything, the moon was very low and to the side on the horizon, not overhead at all.  Finally around 2200 the flash on the camera started going off and I couldn't see anything still.  I was a good 100 yds from the feeder, fortunately the dude's father in law when getting me in there had piled up some corn in a mud hole a little closer to the stand.  From time to time I would turn on my flashlight for a brief moment, one time when I did there were two or three standing about thirty yards from me and I took one, holding the flashlight in my lefthand which was also holding the forearm of the rifle.  very glad to see it not go anywhere, and more happy that it was not a boar.
I'm going back and I'm going to man the spotlight for my friend who will shoot one.  I was allowed to get two and I could have gotten a dozen but I killed the hog last night and JUST NOW have gotten everything put away after grinding it up.

anyway about the forty fours.....I can tell you I am done with H110.  Its a fabulous powder but those little guns even the gas auto ruger thumped my a$$.  I shoot lots of bigger stuff that is not near as unpleasant as those little ba$tards loaded up with healthy doses of H110. I must have been bored over the past few years because I had a couple hundred rounds of H110 fueled 240 soft point, hollow point and then a bunch of 265 hornady.  From now Im going to load a 44 special levels.
Also that huge TASCO on the Marlin didn't work out and was changed the next day.  No matter what I did I could not get it to focus and had the rear eyepiece screwed waaaaaayyy out.  I use to have a killer little bushnell pistol scope on the marlin but its on my sidekick ML now.

Yah, the 44's and hot 45's have a little back-up to em.  I put recoil pads on mine for making the length of pull long enough my thumb didn't hit my nose every time I hit the trigger.  Kinda hard to hit somethin' with yer eyes waterin' so much.  LimbSaver pad are wonderful, they really do work as well as they say they do.  The slip-ons are still under $20.00 at Wal-mart and come in small, med. and large.  If ya don't like the looks of em, only put em on when yer shootin.  DP

I know a lot of folks don't want to hear it... but if you're going to keep shooting game at night... get into a really good scope.  I'm still saving for mine but I have taken some hogs in the middle of the night here in Germany.  Not at 10 but at 0030-1400...  dark...  A nice Swarovski with a lighted reticle is the ticket for this.  Very pricey BUT well worth it.  Lesser scopes can work pretty well if you happen to get a bit of snow on the ground.  If you get snow AND a full moon... you can almost use iron sights.  Well, not really but even my little Nikon 2-7 was fine on a couple of nights last winter.  In the dark, with clouds... gotta have better glass.  Just MHO...

While 110 does zip that bullet along its way it does seem to have a sharper recoil than some others.  Good old 2400 is another option.  You will not give away too many fps and it will still work the Ruger well.  One of the first things I did was have a Limbsaver put on my Marlin and when I shoot the Ruger at the range I usually wear a shoulder pad.  I have a Handi that has two barrels, a 45/70 and  one of the new tighter 44s.  The Handi came with a 'sort of" recoil pad on it but as I shot a lot of45/70 in it I filled the bolt hole with lead shot which added some weight to the gun and even the H110 loads don't move it much.  44's are  great deer guns as long as you don't push the range too much.  My favorite is the Deerfield as you have that quick second shot in case you hit that darn stray twig. ::)

My 44 fest, I have bagged deer with all but the 1894, but that will change.
