257 weatherby
« on: July 26, 2009, 05:38:35 AM »
A few years ago I looked at a Dakota #10 in 257 weatherby. Beautiful rifle and I wish I had bought it but did not. Since then I've owned several bolt guns in that caliber, but I'm not really a bolt action guy so they all went away. I still love the caliber though. Would love to find a single shot in 257 weatherby. Something with class ;D.

:)pastorp, it would be a simple matter to rebarrel a used  Ruger  #1 for a .257 Wea. At times I get the hots for a .300 H & H on a number one. So far I have succeeded in beating back the desire. But I always look at used #1's to find one with beautiful wood, then?????? The thing I especailly like about a rebarrel job is you can have the barrel as long and heavy or light as you like ;)

Coyote Hunter, A friend has a browning high wall in 25-06. Bet I could get it rechambered into the 257 weatherby. Thats a idea that has merit I believe.

Of course it's heavier that a dakota #10.

Regards,

If the .25-06 were to be rechambered to .257 Weatherby, make sure that the .25-06 barrel twist rate, is compatable with the .257 Weatherby twist rate...!

;) :D The current twist for both the 25-06 and 257 Wea. is one in ten. The Wea. used to be 1-12, but it was changed to stabilize heavier bullets like 115 spitzer. The Browning could be altered, I am pretty sure my friend here in town had an 06 rechambered to .300. ;)

I have a #1B in 257Roberts with beautyfull wood. I bought it used and thought to turn it into a 257Wby. It is an easy conversion. But,But,But it is also super accurate the way it is set up. It sits in the Vault and I never used it once on game since I got a Handi custom 257R which is also a tack driver and about 1.5lbs lighter. That is one of my guns I take hunting most of the time.

Now since I build that #1B in 6.5x284 I guess the 257R will stay as is. But make no mistake the 257Wby is one heck of a cartridge. I had a MK V Wby rifle in 257Wby a long time ago and good bullets were not easy to come by. Bullets would either blow up or pass clean through the game. Now a days bullets are no trouble anymore.

But be aware that the 257Wby demands the best bullets you can get.

;) I did check with my pal. He had a Browning 06 rechamber to .300. A mag. extractor was all the other changes he needed to have done. ;)
