new guy wild cats
« on: July 19, 2009, 04:03:15 AM »
I'm new hear and cat fish asked me to post some data on some of the wild cats Iv'e worked with. ( Intoductions)
Catfish you didn't say witch so i will post my 3 fav.

338 ultra shortend .1875 to fit 30/06 actions. (ruger m77)
My sons and I wonted a 340wby in a control feed ruger! For hunting big stuff in north amer. The 340wby has enough power to do it!
I bought 338 ultra dies took .1875 off the base full lainght sized 100 brass, used the brass as a go-gage :o
From the start this cartridge was vary easy to work with.
The ruger took it with only one alteration. To get 3 rounds in all I had to do is mill a little off the floor plate so the bolt wouldn't dragg to hard on the first round up. (top round)
 225gr interbonds  90.5gr rl25 fed match mag 3007fps avg. groups under .75 4517flbs.
 250gr accubonds 81.5gr h4831sc fed match mag 2885fps avg. groups .656 4604flbs
goal acheaved! (this is in 24.5" barrels) avg. vol. is for 4 diff. rifles.

The next one is the same shortend ultra case necked to 270.
This one is a little finicky to reload. And brass is a little harder to make.
We wonted a super flat shooting mule deer rifle with enough horses to get the job done out hear in the desert! (long shot)
The rifle had to be a light packer. Handle easy no muzzle brake. barrel under 26"
so we dicided on a 270 so we could shoot eather 130-140gr bullets!
We realy wonted to beat the 270wby with no belt! :-\
the brass is a trick I had to buy 300,7mm ultra dies take .280 off the base . 270 wby dies was bored out to fitt ultra cases!
The brass needs to be aneled before forming!
the new case was used as a go-gage
after a hole bunch of different loads we just about gave up when we loaded 79.0gr RL22 130gr accubond.Presto 3615fps avg group .389
3 more rifles made for my sons and thay all love that load!

The 3rd round is 338-300 ultra (thay call it the edge naw)
We wonted a heavy waight for long range big game shooting (mine scales in at 16 lbs)
1.25 bbl 5" straight then taper to .925 at muzzle 28" long
we setteld on .225 interbonds 100.0 gr Rl 25 fed match mag 3256fps
longest shot 1437yrds rock chuck
                  1181yrds mulie
                  1064yrds elk
We have killed all kinds of deer, elk, antilope with this rifle and all of them have been one shot kills. ( the closest shot 412yrds)
I've been long range shooting sence 1982. I'v'e wore out at least 12-14 rifles doing this.

;)Wackmaster, Very interesting reading. You have developed some real long rg. rifles. :o The .270 cal. was never one that held much interest for me. Have owned a couple std. .270's over the years, and took some game with them, but always liked either lighter or heavier calibers better. When I was a kid, there was a bunch of long range shooters in my area. One guy was an old Camp Perry shooter, and they all shot deer at long distances, but I think the longest for those guys was  just over 800 yards. At that time, most liked either the 7mm's or 30's. One of my best pals did experiment with a .338/378 long before Wea. brought it out. He killed some deer with it, but nothing excessively long. Why did you decide on the .270 over the 284 dia. bullets for your wildcat???  I know there must be a reason.  Most of my long range shooting is at coyotes. The best I have done is 882 yards. But as you know the trouble with those  guys is you only get one decent try and they are gone. I have shot deer  and elk between 500 and 650 yards several times. I really am not set up for longer stuff than that. So will be satisfied with that for my shooting. :D ;) :)
Catfish and I have visited some about various .22's for long distance varmit hunting. Mainly the quick twist calibers. Of course, these will not reach out like the calibers you are using. Have you done any medium long range shooting with smaller calibers???? :D ;)

I was never interested in the 270 eather.I have shot out 6 25/06 3 30/378wby But to make a long story short when my youngest son turnd 14 and could hunt deer i got a grate deal on a rem 700 in 270 win. After 2 years we rechamerd it to a wild cat .(015 body taper one cal neck 36 deg shoulder)  Man what a gun! Long short big or tall that rifle killed it!130gr 3250fps. That was the first 270 I have realy experanced, all of a suden i could see what JACK was talking about!
but as time went on we started to think not for elk! But what a deer gun! The ultras hit the sceen and i wonted a elk rifle in a ruger but i didn't wont the belt.
After about a day i dicided to shorten the 338 ultra to fit a ruger m77. Man that was a stroke of good luck it worked like a dream and shot like one to. So my boys and i wonted a deer rifle out of the same case. To be honest i wonted to go 6.5mm my 2nd son wonted a 7mm my oldest didn,t realy care what is was as long as it was a killer. The baby of the famly talked us into a 27!
BUT SCENCE THEN WE HAVE A 375 (WOULD NAW BE CALLED THE 375 RUGER) 338,30,28,27,6.5 But to be honest for deer the 27 is the perfect choice. That round just puts the deer down when loaded with 130 accubonds at 3600fps!
When I said long shots with a light packer it is most likly to be under 500yrds. If the shot is going to be longer than that i shoot the 338-300 ultra.

The small calebers.
About 10 ears ago i was on a 22 kick but didn't realy like what was out the so i had a friend make me a reamer we called the 22 wack.
30/06 shortend .220 .015 body taper 36 deg shoulder one cal neck. It would shoot 60 gr hornadys 4432 fps. So I proceded to kill all the rockchucks and cayotes I could with that rifle with fantastic secsess. The only problem was making the brass and shooting with the wind blowing. I still have one in the gun safe but rarly shoot it.(been ther done that) :-\
I get bored easy with 1 rifle so Im'e constetly changing! Trying new ideas and cals. :P

;) Wackmaster, Well, thanks for the reply. I figured there was a reason for the .270. Doubt I ever try a wildcat, but have a line on a std. cal. May try and make a deal on it. Keep shooting and keep us posted. ;)

Great post. I live in Oh. so varmints is all I can hunt with a rifle, hence for long range stuff I like to stick with small cal`s. , .17 through .22. I have several larger cal`s, but they don`t get shot alot. Latest toy is a 6 mm x 47 mm. I traded for it and got some ammo that would not chamber with it. So I pulled the bullets resized the cases and poured the powder back in and reseated the bullet. Form my shake table I seem to pull 2 out of 5 shots every time. That takes my 3 shot group in the high 100`s up into the 400`s. I`m going to get it to a cement bench with new bullet here in the near future and see what I can do with it. Keep the info comming, I love hearing about new rounds.
