Let's talk grips
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:10:32 PM »
What's everyone's gun wearing?  I'm looking for something to help reduce felt recoil.  I was kinda looking at the pachmayr grips.  Anyone have any?  I've seen two in my searches.  One is labeled Mag and the other is just an Encore grip/forend set.  Is there any difference?  Are there any other grips out there that will do the job any better?

Thanks guys.

These grips are by Ole Georgia Jim. This is with my 22 match barrel setup, these grips improved the stabiity with the large flat forend and the flat peice on the grip and made huge improvment in my groups

My Contender and Encore both wear stocks from Denzel Roberts out of Houston.  I chose the Recoil Tamer model.

He'll make them to fit your hand just right.  My Contender got a laminate set and the Encore got walnut.

Check them out.

If you're talking REAL recoil(the kind that makes ya go "ouch!"),  I've found nothing to compare with Pachmyer,  Encore or Contender.  The magnum or non-magnum versions for the Encore, only have to do with the forend.  The magnum version being lighter so it doesn't bend or rip out the screws during recoil.  It's reccomended by Pachmyer for the 30-06 and up.  They sure aren't as pretty as Ole Georgia Jim's or TC Dave's though.

Only two kinds of grips on my Contenders for the last couple of decades - Bullberry Custom made to fit my hand and the Pachmyer Gripper Decelerator.    With the Encores when they first came out it was Bullberry Custom as Pachy didn't make them for that frame yet and I got back out of Encores before they did.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

+1 for Ole Georgia Jim. Some folks like a synthetic (rubber or pachmayr) that sort of "soaks" up the recoil. I like a heavy forend, and a solid grip that shapes to my hand. I don't scope, but if you do that adds mass, which absorbs energy. And there's also technique involved. I use hard walnut grips on a bisley .44 I shoot BB silhouettes - 40 stout loads in a relatively short amount of time, but a buddy helped my with my technique so the recoil doesn't go straight into my hand.
