Is diet coke really dangerous?
« on: July 05, 2009, 06:08:11 AM »
There have been various attempts at linking diet coke to various health problems. As a habitual diet coke drinker (about the equivalent of 7 12 ounce cans a week), I'm beginning to get concerned.

What can you tell me about the realities of diet coke and any dangers there may be with it?

It seems like everyone  (my wife, daughters, and one of our best friends - an RN) tells me how terrible it is for me.  I limit myself to 3 cans a day.  They have not explained clearly to me what is wrong with it though.  They don't seem to have any criticism for other diet drinks, so that would rule out the sweetener - and I don't see what other ingredients in Diet Coke are so terrible.  So, I really don't know.
To me moderation is the key to anything.  Questor, I don't think a can a day would ever create any significant problems.

Maybe I'll do a Google on it and see if any convincing articles pop out.

I quit drinking diet soda just to keep off the sodium. I mostly drink water or unsweetened ice tea. anymore...

Redhawk,
I just looked at my Diet Coke can and it says 40mg of sodium.  I just looked at some 1% milk, and it is 125mg per cup.  Canned soups, tomato juices, etc. are "off the charts" almost - for instance tomato soup 1/2 cup serving is 710mg.
I remember when my Dad had congestive heart failure and was told to limit his sodium to 2000 mg/daily.  So, I don't think Diet Coke is too significant in the sodium content.  I agree though that it is important to watch the sodium.

I have read 2 articles that say the sodium is bad and because of it the diet drinks are no better for you than the real thing.

aspertame distorts my vision to the point that I can't read highway signs until I am almost even with them.
It does things to the body's sugar functions. It is documented with causeing seizure and death.

There are studies in europe that have found that aspartame (also known as nutrasweet) converts to formeldehyde in the body. The lobbyists for coke and pepsi have buried these studies and forced the FDA to state that it is safe.
I began researching this in 2004 when I lost the vision in my left eye, and was then diagnosed with MS. The symptoms of formeldehyde poisoning mimic multiple sclerosis which might be one reason doctors can't find the cause of MS?
Here is one link, there are many more if you do a google search on aspartame formeldehyde poisoning:

(funny how they are only from the UK or europe, another case of our gov't protecting us)

I saw that one of the ways "o" wants to fund obamacare is to tax pop with sugar, and not diet pops. That will surely make for a healthier society! At least the wheelchairs will be easier to push if you are skinny!

Another interesting search : gulf war syndrome diet coke

There are studies ( or maybe just anecdotal evidense) suggesting that the sweetness of the substitutes in some way makes your body crave the real thing even more. In addition the substitutes are from a lab and really aren't that good for you. The wife cannot tolerate aspertame, swells up like she was stung by hornets.

Moderation in everything is the key, one a day? who knows. It has got to be better than two cans and a 44oz big gulp on the way home from work at the asbestos mine.

On a similar note. There are many who blame America's waist line squarely at the door of ADM and the high fructose corn sweetner lobby. I am making it a point to only drink the Pepsi  Throwback  which uses only real suger. It tastes like the pop we grew up on, sweet but not sickeningly so. They can put the corn sweetner in the tank of my car if they want to, I'll pass drinking it for as long as it is practical to do so.

The way I look at it, there is nothing in pop that is good for you, I don't even use it as mix for my Friday night adult beverage.
If your in really hot weather, your body can't even sweat that stuff out very good.  It must be addicting,  I know people at work who drink it all day long.
I wonder if they ever take a drink of water sometimes,  I never see them drink water.

Dunno if it's bad for you but it has a HORRIFIC taste to me. I don't drink diet anything and seldom drink soda pop of any sort but when I do it's usually MUG root beer or Grapico. I drink milk (whole milk), kool-aid or gatorade or water. No alcohol period.

Hi
And to add to what TM7 has said. Do a search yourself on "aspartame and ELF".
You can read for yourself about effects of aspartame.

Reading this thread reminded me of talking with several customers and dealers a couple years ago. They all said the same thing. I always figured everything in moderation.
But, just for everbody's info, if you want to stick to a diet soda pop, you might want to try Diet Rite Pure Zero. According to their label, it doesn't contain sodium, or aspartame. 'Course with the FDA allowing the company's to fudge on their truth in advertising b.s. labels, it's hard to know for sure if it's really pure or not. It's bottled under the authority of DR.PEPPER/7UP inc., out of Plano,TX.  gypsyman

I enjoy 2 cups of coffee each morning, no sweetener or cream. The rest of the time I drink the drink God made for us.   WATER!

Mine comes from a pristine mountain lake here in alaska. Tastes good and good for you too.

Looking at an empty 2 liter in front of me, it says, sweetened with Splenda. Probably as bad as aspartame. Is Splenda the other sweetner, that fought it out in the 70's with sacrine?(did I spell that right?)I think I remember reading a couple years ago, that the sweetner that won most of the business, was actually the worst of the 2. It was a big FDA payoff or something like that. Not to sure if my memory has been affected by to much aspartame, or to much beer.  gypsyman

I drink Diet Coke with Splenda.  Does anyone know if there is anything bad about Splenda?  I became diabetic 3 years ago, but I did drink a lot of sugar in regular soft drinks.  Had to cut my sugar intake, but regular diet Coke tastes bad, so I drink soft drinks with Splenda if I can find them or just water.  Lost almost 40 lbs just cutting out the sugar and sweets.

I drink Diet Coke but I've thought about quitting before, maybe this is what it should take. I know it's not good for you and yes, I'm not skinny, not by a long shot. I've often wondered if somehow the chemicals aren't actually tricking the body and making the body think something else is going on.

As a diabetic i had to take classes on diet . To be honest they were pretty good . The one thing that is made clear is food that is  processed is not as good for you as food that is not  . Hot dog not as good as un processed beef or pork  . A small amount of sugar is better than processed subs . As an example low carb ice cream is ( small amount of sugar ) better for you than sugar free . We were told that diet drinks were ok every so often as the amount of chemicals that hurt you are small and would take more than you would get in only a few cans . For me i can do with out as i agree with GB they don't taste good .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
