How old is old?
« on: July 04, 2009, 03:28:39 AM »
I used to think 40 was old. But since then I've seen a lot of people in their 90s that have fine and fulfilling lives. I wouldn't consider them old because of that. On the other hand, I've known people that were miserable and frail in their 30s, and I could characterize them as old.

My father in law was 87 when he died and he was still farming and doing wood working and charity work. He didn't seem old because he had a good life. My mother in law is 90 now and her mind is going and she's frail. She's old.

What does old mean to you?

I think you're exactly right, you're only as old as you feel.

I didn't think that M. Jackson or Billy Maze were 'old' either... and look where they are now.  ???

Just goes to show that it doesn't matter how old (or young) you are you better know where you stand with your creator while your still breathing.  ;)

I just turned 60, some days I feel old.  Other days I feel like I did back when I was in my 30s.  Riding the motorcycle, driving the cars, riding the 4-wheeler or snow machine, I feel young.  Climbing a mountain, hiking the woods trails, walking 800 yards down range to change targets, I feel old.  I'm the oldest of five, but physically I'm younger than the next three.

Both my Grandmas lived into their late 90s.  Both were active, right up to the end.  I've outlived both of my Grandfathers.  My Dad and Mom are both 80.  Dad has Alzheimer's, Mom is right behind him.  I keep telling my brothers we are going to have to do something about them soon, but they don't want to face it.

Last year at my 40th reunion, some of those people (most) were old.  But a few of the ladies made me feel like prancing around like a young stallion.  I felt and acted a lot younger than most of the people there.  And at 6'2" and 225 lbs, I was one of the trimmest men there.  Yes I'm a little overweight, but I'm not obese, or morbidly obese like most of the guys.

I think staying physically fit has a lot to do with it.  And your mind set.  Having a wife that is 8 years younger than you might also help.  And a 20 year old son, still living at home and doing things with him, like rafting rivers, hiking, working out at the gym, and mountain biking.  Riding the bike is fun, but I sure hate it when I crash, that hurts.

Darn got to go, thinking about all this brought on chest pains.  Now where did I put the nitro.

I think Sourdough hit the nail on the head.  I've been working out since I turned 40 (eight years ago).  I lift weights, ride my bike and watch what I eat (most of the time ;)).  I used to smoke and I used to drink a bit, but I quit doing that as well.

I feel like I did when I was in my 20's.  My attitude is much better and my outlook on life is much "sunnier" than it used to be.  Plus, I'm the only one of my group of friends who isn't on any meds.

It's well worth the time and effort.  I know father time will catch me sometime, but I'm trying to keep him away as long as possible.

I've had a by-pass that failed, and I am diabetic.  But I feel better now than I did in my early 50s, I turned 60 last March.  Yes I still go and climb mountains, it's rough but I still do it.  and I do a lot of things Younger men thing it too hard.

Recently while helping a non-profit organization unload a tractor trailer rig I was up inside the van moving the boxes to the back so the crew on the ground could move them inside the building.  One of the men on the ground made a comment "I'm too old to be doing this, and it's too hot to boot."  I asked how old are you?  He replied, "37."  I then asked if there was any breeze outside, he said "yes."  I then invited him up into the truck to  help this 69 year old man.  He left but when he came back he had a cold drink for me and said I shopuld get out of the truck and set in the shade while the ypounger men finished unloading the truck.  Thaat was an offer I couldn't refuse........

I suddenly aged a lot a few weeks ago.  An old fire fighting injury has come back to haunt me.  Forty years ago the ground collapsed under me where a large root had been burning underground.  The cartilage in my knee was torn.

My wife drove me to the doctor who gave me a prescription for pain pills, had my knees X-Rayed, and referred me to a Sports Medicine Doctor.  The appointment with the SMD was a week out and I was hurting.  It is the first time in my life that I have looked forward to taking a pain pill.  I have had surgery on both knees in the past, and after a day or so I did not take any pain pills.  It was a kiss of death in a job where one carried a firearm.

The SMD gave me a couple of options, a series of three shots of Hyalgan in the knee(s) or cortisone.  The SMD said one of these days I would need a knee replacement.  Normally the bone ends are good for two knee replacements.  A knee replacement can be expected to last ten years, before needing replacement.  The recommendation is that I put the replacement off a few years.  Interesting that a hunting partner 250 miles away received the same recommendation from his specialist.

I went with the cortisone shot because I did not want to get into a series of shots because my wife was setup for surgery on 7/1 and I need to be on hand to take care of her.  I will return for the Hyalgan shots on a later date.

The hard (aging) part came when the doctor said I needed to give up long walks, and hikes over uneven terrain.  That is tough because that is what I enjoy, taking a hike and using a gps, or going hunting.  I put out a couple of acceptable options, the stationary bike we have and riding my mountain bike.

There was a time rehabbing from my knee surgeries I could do a lot on the Stationary bike we had because I could crank on the arms and legs.  I cannot do it on the recumbent bike we now have.  We have a TV setup in front of it and a boring hour goes by.  It is better than nothing.  I was concerned because I felt some discomfort after a session.  I decided all or nothing and setup my weight bench.  At the end of the bench there is a device which you can do leg lifts.  I pulled the fifty pounds of weight off each side and replaced it with lighter weights and I have increased it from where I started.  The leg lifts worked and the pain went away, wonders or wonders.

The mountain bike is a different story, I pulled it out of storage oiled the chain, and aired the tires.  Now from my place you go uphill or downhill.  I chose option three and hauled my bike to flat ground for a few days.  The knee held up okay but, the behind did not like that narrow seat.  The rides were short and then extended with me covering the same ground.  The plus side was the cool early morning air and encountering a few other aging people trying to stay alive.    I am over weight but there is one guy out there riding a bike that must weigh 300-pounds.  He is out there every morning working hard for more than an hour, I respect the man.  I use the gps to keep track of my time, mileage, speed, and have it in track mode.  I can display the data on my computer and Google Earth.  All is not lost, I guess I can attach a gps to a wheelchair if I make it to the old folks home.  I can create waypoints for the dining room, and the bathrooms.

There was a time when I was working hard in the woods that I would go to work after a good breakfast with 4 to 6 sandwiches in my lunch bucket, and I would return home at night and eat a hardy dinner.  I could not gain weight on such a diet, today for lunch I am looking forward to a turkey, and lettuce salad, heavy on the lettuce.

In the morning when out on the bike the young and the old me cross paths when the cute blond out jogging says hello, or the neighbor lady stops and says how much she admires what I am doing as I struggle to peddle up the hill.

OLD??!! Hummmm.
You can be old at 30 or 90. Some folks just fair better than others and it does not depend, entirely on keepig fit and living a healthy lifestyle.
Some folks just go early.
You can't depend on genes either.
I am fortunate and There are friends younger that are flat just wornout.
The Lord knows and it is His timetable.
Enjoy the day while it is here and don't be concerned about tomorrow, it is in the hands of the Lord.

I think you're starting to get old when the hair in your nose and ears start growing longer than the hair on your chest and arm pits. :D

I'll be 66 in 6 more days, but wait a minute, I've got to go trim the hair out of my nose and ears so that I'll be a little more streamlined for paddling my sea kayak 20 miles, or so, today.

Don't trim the nose hair, it might keep you afloat if you capsize the kayak.

How do you do that? I couldn't paddle a kayak 20 miles in a day if my life depended on it, or at least I don't think I could. Are you traveling with a strong current and a hurricane at your back?

Maybe I'm must overestimating the effort. Can you sketch out how long it takes, the conditions, the speed you can attain with a kayak, etc? I'm really curious about this.

Somedays, don't feel old at all. Arthritus doesn't seem to be acting up, joints feel pretty good. Then, I get out of bed, and it all goes to hell. Watched when I was a kid, my dad soaking his feet in epsom salts and warm water. Use to think, I'll never do that. The box is on the shelf in the bathroom. The Aleve bottles are scattered around, one in the kitchen, one in my bathroom, one in my briefcase.
I guess the main thing is thinking young. We have a golden retriever that is between 13 and 14 years old.(male) Whenever the german shepard,(female), walks by, he still gets up and gives her a sniff, where dogs like to sniff. (their both fixed by the way!!)Gives my hope for the coming years. Maybe I should mention, I'll be 54 next Monday, and my wife just turned 38 last month. Sometimes a good shot of testosterone will make ya feel like a kid again. gypsyman

There was 3 old men on a bench at the park , a beautiful girl passed by wearing a miniskirt and heels . The first old guy said i sure would like to hold her hand , the second old guy said me to and give her a hug and kiss . The third old guy said me to and wasn't there something else ?
Now that's old !

Part of it is having the right kayaks and a good part of it is conditioning.  My long distance sea kayak (19'-2") cruises at better than 5 mph with very little effort.  I have been kayaking for quit a few years and am used to paddling steadily for 6 to 8 hours.  I do have to make a pit stop now and then, but it doesn't take me long to take a pit these days and I'm right back to paddling.
I will admit that I didn't do 20 miles yesterday, but I did have a good paddle in some interesting conditions.  At one point, I encountered up to six foot swells topped by wind waves that were coming at 90 degrees to the swells and some chop generated by ship and large boat traffic.  I wasn't in the long distance yak; I had chosen a little shorter one for the day and I"m glad I did, because it is better at maneuvering through the rough stuff.

40 is old to me, but I am still a youngun.  30 used to be old til I met Matt...he was over thirty then. :)  I guess old is subjective to how old you are.

A little story for us older guys , When in my 30's on a deer drive with dogs i found myself about a half mile from the truck across a cutover . You had to step over something just about every step no path much less road . Those who hunt Va. can tell ya what its like a few years after cutting . Anyway I shoot a 12 point buck BIG DEER . my dad was in his 60's as was another hunter there . the only other guy to show up was in his late 70's . The 70 year old walks up looks down says Da-- nice deer and in the same breath says everybody grab a leg and get this thing out , I don't want to miss the next drive ain't got many more left . Those "old guys " liked tho have killed me dragging that deer out !
