Rem . 870 smooth bore or rifled slug barrel???????????
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:26:26 PM »
I got a new rem. 870 express on trade this week, I want to put a scope and a slug barrel on it to make it a deer/wild pig killer.

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_express_ShurShot_synthetic_turkey.asp

The gun has a great feel to it.  Which barrel the smooth or the rifled ?????? the pro's and the con's????????

I found a new smooth bore barrel a Remington 20"  unfired, with rifle sights , And Bought it.

What brand slugs should i start out with???????

THANKS

I noticed you give your location as "Swamps of Georgia", if your shots will be less than 100yds, you should be good to go without a scope.
In smoothbore slug barrels, I've had good luck with the Winchester Rifled slugs. 12ga, 2 3/4", 1oz at 1600fps, usually good for 2" at 50yd and 4 or 5" at 100yd in my 1100 and 500.
You might try some Remington Buck Hammers, I've heard they are good in smoothbores, and should really put a hurtin' on a hog.

Since you purchased a smooth bore barrel w/open sights, I'm going to assume that's how you will utilize your new slug gun.

I have an old Winchester 1300 slug gun that really likes both the Winchester winlite rifled slugs (1 oz slug, 1200 fps, 1400 ft lbs of muzzle energy) and the Fiocchi reduced recoil slugs (1 oz slug, 1150 fps, 1300 ft lbs of muzzle energy).

At ranges of 75 yards and in these slugs will provide plenty of killing power without the nasty recoil associated w/foster slugs.  You might give 'em a try.

I've had good luck with brenneke (spelling) out of smooth bores!
