.357 Maximum Ballistic Tables??
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:50:55 AM »
Has anyone got a link where I can find ballistic tables for the .357 Max. out of a rifle.  I'm most interested in a short and long range trajectory chart.  Thanks,

Pete

I do not have such a chart. What I do is find the velocity of my round and the BC of the bullet. I then look up a similar bullet (one with a near BC and bullet shape/size) in Hornady's 6th edition manual #2. That will give me a pretty good idea where my bullet will be going. Of course this only gives you a ball park figure, shooting actual distances give you the real story. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Pete , what round are you using? I can send you a ballistic chart if you like. Also need barrel length. It will not be exact but will be close enough for about any use.

Thanks guys, they are Precision Cartridge 180 gr. SJHP, have no idea as to what powder is there.  They're out of a 22 inch Handi.

Pete,

A prediction chart is convenient, but not the best resource, it would be best for you to just shoot it at different ranges to learn what the trajectory is.  To predict what the trajectory is, you would need a chronographed velocity of the load from your rifle and the bullet's ballistic coefficient to get anywhere close.  ;)

I guess I could sight it in at 100 yards, and try that setting at 20, 25, 30, yards etc. till I found where it was dead on again.  I could do the same at l50 and 200 also.

Tim is correct, just shoot it at different distances, you will soon learn what it takes for hold over/under. Like you said, zero it at 100 yards and then shoot 3 shot groups at 25, 50, 75, 125, and 150 yards. I would only be concerned about 150 yards+ if you really think you will get a shot at that distance. If you are zeroed in at 100 yards, it will be considerably low at 200 some where around 15" or so. A 150 yard zero will put you about 8" low at 200 yards and 3.5" high at 100. I am making an estimate based on a Hornady 180 grain XTP @ 2000 fps - that is all an estimate. You need to shoot them to be sure. It will not only tell you how far to hold under or over, but how accurate it is at every range. Good Luck and Good Shooting Pete.

I think I'm being somewhat misunderstood.  I'm not concerned with the long range POI.  What I want to know is if it is sighted in at 100 yards, where does it cross line of sight close in climbing.......the close zero point.  I've worked with the .45-70 til hold over/under is almost automatic for long shots.  A bullet crosses line of sight twice, once climbing and second dropping to POI.  With the Max, I want to learn at what distance that first crossing is when sighted in at 100, 150, or 200 yards.  In other words, If I'm sighted in at 150 yards, where do I hold to dust a racoon at 75 feet?

Thanks again......and again,

Pete

That depends more on scope height, typically the bullet's trajectory crosses the line of sight at about 25yds or so, shoot it and you'll find out exactly.  ;)

Ye Sir!  I'madoinit!  Yes Tim, I think that's what I need to do, sight it in at say 100 and see where it is at 25.

I always like to check mine so I know where to hold on a grouse's head, close up the bore is below line of sight, hold on his neck and I'll get nothing but a pile of dead feathers!!  :o ::)

There are free ballistic software downloads out there - very useful - google them up.
