Coug goes "Bee Aaaaa Rrrrr"

Went an done it, got a 338 BAR Stalker with Boss!  Hey, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do

This moose thing was buggin me.  I figgered the -06 to be capable enough under a lot of scenarios, but the LD shooting potential of the clearcuts  drove me to the 338.

I've had 338 guns. All beat the livin piss outa me.  I figured this was going to be the same.  I lit one off the bags and expected it, but it never came.  WOW!  Less recoil than a 308!!!!  That Boss brake does it proper!

Holding just inside of 2 inch groups at 250 yards off the side of a tree, centered L&R, about 2 inches high.  That shoud do me square to 300 yds, I figure 400 if I hold on the top of the hump.  Of course I much prefer a 40 yard shot or closer, but if I gotta do LD, I'm ready for it.

Settled that.

Also got a BAR Safari in -06, also with BOSS.  Haven't shot that one yet, but I'm thinkin recoil on par with a BB gun

Will keep ya posted.

Well, More BAR info please

Coug,
Sounds like the BAR is a winner. Some questions. Does the "Stalker" appellation indicate some special configuration, or is it the standard model? How much barrel length does the BOSS add? Can the firearm be had without the BOSS? Is this firearm easy to disassemble and clean? And, finally, was it the magnum cartridge offering that turned you away from Remington?
Regards,
:?

Great choice of rifle - I'm a little luke warm on the cartridge, not being a magnum fan.

I've been keeping my eyes open for a good used BAR in .308 for deer and moose hunting myself.  The only problem is I also like the look of the Norinco M305 - an M14 clone in semi auto.  If a good deal on a BAR doesn't come around soon, I may go the M305 route.

I hope the moose you get is far enough away that the magnum can pay its freight.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

Targ

The particular one I have has 26 inches of barrel as staed on the box. Two of which are the BOSS.  Of course the Browning book says the barrels are measured with the boss installed and state it at 24 inches???  Even weirder is the 30-06.  That one says 22 inches, and it IS 22 inches INCLUDING the BOSS, which if my math is still righ, gives me 20 inches of barrel.

That stalker is available without BOSS, and, the one I have has that new Dura something finish on the plastic.  Strange stuff.  It looks slick and slippery, but it's like glue when you touch it.  Oughta work.

The trigger group drops out with two pins removed.  The forend is a %$#&@ to put back on until you figure out what's going on, least it was for me

Rick

I'm not big on the 338 either, but I went to it because of the possibility of LD shots in the clearcuts.  As known, the 338 is not known for super accuracy, as say like the 308. So I was pleased with the results I got with minimal foostering with the boss.  I am suspect that it can do even better, but I was low on time and ammo.

I am, and always will be brand loyal to the Remington pump.  As stated, I think the people in the Browning conglomerate are morons.  I loathe their "Best There Is..." this year, to see it dropped next year.

The BAR , as was the Auto5, is a tried and true weapon.  I'm amazed they haven't dropped the BAR with that said, usually what they do and then replace it with some bazzar stuff.

I don't hunt anymore but every time I shoot my Bar with Boss in '06 I look at the target and I am amazed! Browning: The best there is! Browning is telling the truth!

So Coug,
How did the synthetic stocked Lightweight version carry in the field?  How does the rifle handle with a scope? It would be interesting to read some of your remarks regarding handling, ease of carry, pointability, etc after using the rifle in the field and reflecting on its performance. I ended up with a Remington 7400, as the Browning just doesn't fit my grip.
