Reloading Supplies
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:19:52 AM »
We have talked about reloading accessories being hard to find on several forums here, I just found from first hand experience exactly how hard they are to find.

The wife and I just returned from a three week trip through the “heartland”.  We mostly traveled the back roads from West Texas up through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and back to Texas.  I made it a point to stop at every gun/gun related store that I could to buy small rifle and pistol primers.  I must have visited at least thirty stores along the way and only manages to find one store in Rapid City, S.D. that had primers; they would only sell 200 per customer but with my wife buying her allotment we managed to get out with 400.  Even the large stores like Cabala’s and Schell’s said they could not get primers from the distributors.  No one really had a good answer for the shortage other than the fact that they thought reloading supplies were being bought and stored in fear of what may happen with this administration.  I also found an absence of .357 Sig and .380 ammo.  One store had one box of Winchester Lawman .357 Sig in JHP and a big Schell’s store in Lincoln, NE. had SOME .380.

After returning home I stopped by a local shop owned by a very good friend and he said his supplier had promised him primers but has been unable to deliver.  Is everyone experiencing the same problem?

Just a note, other than a rim on the trailer comming apart and dropping the trailer on my truck ( darn fool forgot to check the lock on the fifth-wheel) it was a wonderful trip.  The people all along the way were wonderful, and my faith was totally restored in mankind.  While in the Badlands I lost my money clip, I went back and talked to a ranger and was advised to check their head office tomorrow morning.  I was just going to write it off since I only had (I thought) 40-50 dollard in the clip but after a bit of "nagging" from the wife I called the ranger station the next morning and was advised that my money clip had been found and turned in by someone.  We were camped about six miles away so we drove over to pick it up, I was shocked to learn that I had over a hundred dollars in the clip.  I was glad to get it back, and delighted to find there are still some honest people out there.

Same everywhere I look.
We haven't had one primer in Enid OK for months.
What kills me is that other reloading equipment and supplies are still in high demand.

I got a couple hundred small rifle magnums from my brother the other day.
When he first bought them I had said no thanks. "I'd have to work up my load again"

Happy you and the Mrs. had a nice vacation Rockbilly. Indeed, what I find as one of the most amazing events in your travels is that you got the money clip, and the money back. :o That is really something in this day and age. Someone out there is earning a place in Heaven for sure. Like you, I'm also very delighted to see that not everyone has lost their humanity for their fellow man. Sorry you weren't as fortunate in getting the reloading components, but overall it sounds like you had a great trip.

I posted a few days ago that M..... had large rifle primers in stock to help people out, but the post was deleated by moderators.  >:(    Now they are out of stock again.
I was trying to help other GB forum reloaders out. Hey, we can't reload if we don't have primers. I know MidSouth is a sponcer of the forum but they haven't had them in months, so how could it hurt them, and I alway try them first. I don't understand why the moderators did that, I think it was a dis-service to the members. I imagine this will go poof also.

GB straightened my ass out. Nothing like a good spanking. Not sure what happened but the post is still there. My bad. Hope GB members were able to get them.

Perhaps you're just a little too full of yourself. Your post is still up for all to read at:

Perhaps next time you should look before you start blaming folks for doing things no one did. An apology to the mods might be in order. It took me all of 15 seconds to click on your name look at your last posts and find it. You could have as well.

Stopped by my local gun shop on the way home today, and they had large and small pistol primers as well as the first  small rifle primers I've seen in  a long time.  Limit 1000 per size per customer.  I picked up 1000 small rifle for a guy I work with so he can feed his AR, but I'm in good shape otherwise so I left the rest for others.  Same shop has had (and continues to have) plenty of powder and bullets in stock.  Things are looking better and better here, for which I'm thankful.

Primers come and go just like items on the classified section in the Handi rifle area. Sometimes things only last 20 minutes. If you want primers keep checking the different vendors all day every day and you'll find them. I know a guy that wrote a program that would send him a text via his c-phone when primers became available. They're out there you just have to look... hard.

Since I have been reloading (long time), everytime I stop by a shop or buy online, I usually by at least a bag of brass or a box of primers. I did not see this coming (the shortage) but something I just did as habit. But now I have tons of new brass and thousands and thousands of primers. They just kinda accumulated over the years.  ;D

The only primers I am finding is Pistol primers.  I bought the last 700 209 shot gun primers my local store had about 3 months ago.  They havent had one rilfe or shotgun primer come in since!  They do seem to have a good supply of powder, been buying the crap out of it too!

While I have several thousand primers you can bet the first time I see more for sale several thousand a pay day will be going into my stash until I am confident that short of a war I will never need to buy another primer and even at that point it might  be debatable as to if I have enough.  I have seen shortages before which is why I have so much and I expected shortages this time too but nothing this long or this severe

Questor, I found plenty of shotgun primers most everywhere I looked, it is the small pistol and rifle primers that are hard to find.  I also found a few large rifle and pistol primers, managed to purchase a 1000 of each.

I want small primers for the .357 Sig, 9mm and .40 pistols and the small rifle for .223.

Wow. I'll have to check into this. I'm down to my last 2500 pistol primers.

Do you happen to know why they are hard to get? Is it really because of hoarding?

Not a problem. I notice lots of folks jumping to such conclusions rather than finding their posts. Seldom when I look do I find them really gone unless there was something grossly out of place about them.

I haven't seen primers in quite some time.  I'm getting tired of being laughed at when I ask.  The same goes for ammo.  I haven't seen a box of 45 ACP on a store shelf in a month of Sundays.

Stopped in at my favorite dealer's shop today, and low and behold, he had small rifle, large rifle, magnum small rifle, and magnum large rifle primers in stock, and they were going fast. I bought 1 box of small rifle, because that's all I need right now. Cost was $29.50 per box of 1000.
