Weaver 92A Scope Mount Question

I put a Weaver 92A scope mount on my Contender 10" Octagon barrel in 222 Rem.

After putting a Leupold VXII 2x7 scope on the mount, I bore sighted the scope.
I had too much elevation and had to go all the way to the bottom on the elevation
adjustment on the scope to get to the center zero. No room to go any lower!

It would appear that the mount is canted up. Has anyone experienced this? I removed and remounted
the mount and scope several times. Same issue. Changed rings same problem.

I guess I may need to shim the back of the base. Comments?

     The hole spacing is the same either way....is it possible that you have the base mounted backwards?  The base should extend out over the octagon portion of the barrel.   :o Just checking.

I did have that problem on one of my scopes but on close inspection found that the bolt that clamps scope to mount was not centered and was not letting the mount drop all the way down on base you might check that very easy to think it is where it should be as it will still clamp up.screw head could also be contacting the bolt if it is up too high I have had that problem too.Just make sure that ring base is in full contact with base, does not take much to get you off.

I've used 92A bases on two dozen different barrels without the problem described.  However, it is a mass-produced item and bad ones can slip through.  I did get one with improper hole spacing once.

Do not shim it, they are cheap so get a replacement and send the current one back to Weaver for a refund.   A solid mount is essential for reliability and reducing the contact between the base and barrel is asking for trouble - especially with that big old scope hanging on and a mount that dies not contact the barrel along its full length.  Even a .222 should have a solid mount.

Thanks Lone Star and others,

While putting the scope mount on the barrel, I noticed that the forward tap in the barrel was stripped.
If the forward tap could not be tightened, I figured it would cause the mount to cant up. Also, my mount was only being held by the rear screw. Not good for stability.

I re tapped the hole from 6-48 to 8-40. Had to redrill forward mount hole on mount. The new larger screw and tap snug up fine. Still have the upward cant.

I'll try this today, hopefully I will only have to go up in elevation!

Obviously there is a problem. What does "had too much elevation" mean, gun shoot too high or couldn't adjust crosshairs down to match line of sight thru the bore.
I have that mount, don't use it but I had it out last night to use for determining ring height on a 'tender project. At best you get five full threads using the provided screws to attach the mount to the barrel. Remounting many times will no doubt remove the five or so threads in those 6-48 tapped holes.
Got to be something simple, four tapped holes in one barrel, flat piece of aluminum, four holes in it, ...this is not a complex series of parts. Use a mike and check the mount front and rear, make sure there are no burrs under it.

My barrel only has 3 holes tapped. Two at the rear and one forward.

I went to the range this PM and had a disappointing session. Luckily, the newly mounted scope
a 2x7 was shooting low at  50 yards, that's good. I have plenty of elevation!

I put the higher power rifle scope on for better shot placement than with my 1.3x scope. My shots would appear to start grooping, then I would get fliers low and to the left by several inches with the same loads.

My buddy says it may be a barrel bolt fit wear issue.
