Got a VP
« on: July 01, 2009, 03:33:45 AM »
Went shopping by myself yesterday and picked up a 22/410 Versa Pack that's been sitting on the shelf at GM for a couple of months now.  Everytime I went by the store either the Mrs or tagalongs(loose lips) have been with.
So yesterday I had an opening and made a break for it.  A clean getaway!  Can't wait to shoot...

Easy way to sneak them into the house is to stick a cleaning rod in a gun case and say your going to the range.  Stop off at the gun shop and pick up your new toy head out to the range shoot it and take the cleaning rod and stick it in your range bag.
The wife sees you leave with three or four cases and sees you come ack with three or four cases.  It's the same thing she does when she buys a new purse.

There is nothing easier to "sneak" past the wife than a gun that breaks down to 20" max in 30 seconds. GM is a PITA though because buying a gun takes an hour.

How much BTW? I just bought a like new one for $150. Think that seller felt like he really scored. So did I.

Yea, I really should feel guilty for sneeking it past my wife, but at $139 OTD, NOPE I'M GOOD! ;D
Oh, and I was in and out in 15 minutes.

Just don't forget to tell them to take you off their mailing list, otherwise in 2 weeks you get a "Congradulations on your new gun! Here are our perks for buying a gun at our store...."   That can be a real killjoy. :(

Ha, ha.  Tried that before, screaming and hollering then the silent treatment..................................... Trust me (for a couple bucks) this is MUCH easier.

I save the "tell her" part for an out of state hunting trip. ;)

LAst time I came home with more guns than I was supposed to, I thought I was gonna be okay, since she had the flu real bad, but she'd had a miraculous recovery while I was gone; took some quick 'splainin; the gun I bout for $250 was worth about $650, so I made her a spreadsheet listing all the guns, what I paid, and their values. ......then, I mentioned how many pairs of shoes she could buy with that the day after I died! ;D Then, I asked, so, "How much money do you have invested?" (all of her invested money is in shoes, Tupperware, and other useless garbage)

A friend of mine talks about precious metals: jewelry for women and guns for men.  Nothing is ever that simple, but it may be close.

I don't deny my wife her things, and she respects my need to get a gun once in a while.

No, it's pretty simple; no matter how much money we bring in, she spends more than that, then runs crying to her idiot mother. I wouldn't mind her spending so much if it wasn't all on garbage. No matter how much she spends, she has nothing to show for it.
When I spend money, it's generally for guns and tools. I rarely buy anything without being able to make a profit on it.

I think the shoe thing works best.
Look at her shoes there are three to five pair of black ones that look similar.
Same with my 22LR gun.
They look similar and basically do the same thing but are all a little different and fit that specific job.

I am a lucky man.  My wife is not like that at all, and if she were she wouldn't have been my wife for the last nearly 40 years.

Once again we seem to be off the track, guys.  NEF rimfires, not marriage counseling.

So should I put a Williams WGRS peep on it (and a .680 front) or just add scope rail and rings and mount my old Simmons 4x32?

I 'spose I'm pretty lucky . . . the boss, aka my lovely wife, understands my gun-crank needs (though she does roll her eyes when I say I'm headed to the workbench for "a little bit" -- there's time as the clock tells it, and then there's time spent handloading or changing the scopes around on my rifles for the millionth time).

My Versa-Pack was broken up almost as soon as I got it.  The rifle barrel fits the nicest of my Handi frames as if it was factory-fitted.  That frame wears the .22LR VP barrel with a 4x32 rimfire scope, along with the ought-six barrel with a 4x32 centerfire scope, and the .357 Max barrel with a 2.5x20 shotgun scope.  This particular Handi frame has a remarkably good trigger, and the VP barrel is the most accurate rifle barrel of the three that fit it.  It is stocked with a maple MC factory stock that, when refinished, was found to have some good fiddleback figure.

The original VP frame now wears the 22" .410 barrel, as well as two different 12-gauge barrels.  I installed a straight-comb wood Handi stock with recoil pad, to tame the kick of the 12-gauge barrels.  Makes a terrific lightweight 12 for squirrels and bunnies, and the original short VP stock is stored away for future use when grandkids come along.

I plan to put my Simmons on it for now, maybe the peep later.

I noticed the 22lr barrel locks up tight, but the barrel release lever dosen't pop up as much as with the 410 on it and it dosn't sound the same when it snaps together.  The 22lr barrel lug has a small dent on the front of it and the lug groove(?) shows uneven wear.  When my GS orders the scope rail, I'll have him look at it.
My 20ga and other 410 barrel lock up like they were made for each other.

Tried my VP .22lr barrel this weekend. Hated the very high iron sights. Gonna order the Numrich short rail and maybe a riser (if anyone makes Weaver rail risers)
