20ga slug availability
« on: June 28, 2009, 12:52:12 PM »
Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased a 20ga ULSH and was wondering about the availability of slugs.  Are they hard to get right now, too?  Who has what?  If all else fails, my fall-back plan is to purchase 5 boxes of the new Dixie 20ga Slugs that are coming out next month sometime. My concern is driven by the recent surge in ammo sales and the fact that I won't be returning stateside until Nov from this deployment.  Nov is sometimes a little iffy when it comes to ammo sales.  The stores usually get more in for deer season, but they also sell more for the same reason.

Thanks, Dinny

About a month ago I ordered 20ga slugs from Graff & Sons. My USH likes Win. Supreme 3", so I ordered 4 boxes. They had an OK selection in stock, at the time.

Dinny, I just ordered a few boxes of 20 ga. slugs from Midway last night.  I looked through most of their offerings in both 2 3/4" and 3" from Hastings, Federal, Winchester, and Remington sabot slugs and all were available.  One thing that I did not realize was the cost of 20 ga slugs.  I won't be shooting a great number of these but I will shoot enough to get the barrel "on target".  I got the 3" Winchester and Remington with the 260 gr slug and the Federal 5/8 oz slug.
You should have said something; I didn't know I had struck a nerve.

Duckhunter,
It's remarkable how fast those slugs add up in price.  It's always a costly venture to find what ammo a specific gun likes.  After that it's just feeding it enough to do what you want it to. Let us know how it shoots,  I have the same barrel on a ULSH and would be interested to see how it shoots.
Thanks, Dinny (from Iraq)

I've seen a fair amount of 20 gauge slugs at Gander Mt. I'm also surpised that just about anywhere you look they cost close to 12 gauge slugs. The two slugs I've recently used that I've had good accuarcy and performance on deer are the Hornady SST and the Winchester Partion Gold which I'm currently using. The Winchesters can be a little costly depending on what store you're at but I've seen a lot at them at the Gander Mt. near my house. Sometimes those and the SST's have been on the shelf and the same type of 12 gauge slugs weren't. I'd say just look around because when I've been at stores like Gander Mt. I have always seen a decent supply of  20 gauge slugs from a few different companies, both rifled and sabot.

my local gods country has a full supply..its the first 20 ga. in 2b buckshot 3 inch magnum ,,ive ever seen ...they had 1oz slugs in same thing...thought i was going to have to make some..they also had most other 20 ga. shells ..
now this time i bought a supply  ..call it hoarding or not...i may never see that type buckshot again...
 i experimented with just one....
if you jump a deer in close,,or out to 30 yrds,,,[mines old28 inchsmooth bore... it ll take it dn with a decent shoulder or neck shot..
lung  shot also, im thinking....at 20-25 yrds the spread was less than a foot, with several 2bs doubling up an making slug size holes,in 3/4 plywood..
the 1oz slugs were like shooting a rifle..one that needed a limb saver ,,which i have on it..good luck slim..

Dinny, I have tested the 20 ga barrel and found it to be extremely accurate, much better than I expected.  In the way of supply, Midway has had several kinds of 20 ga rifled slug ammo and I have restocked since my range session.

I have an extra box or two of the 20 ga slugs.  If you get home and can't find them, send me a note.  Can't have you going into hunting season with an empty gun.

As for the accuracy of the 20 ga barrel; I put it on my frame without any modification or adjustment.  The Winchester 260 gr slugs were 'so-so' but the Remington 260 gr AccuTip were really great.  After the first shot and subsequent sight adjustment, I put the next four rounds into a 2" square centered on the aiming dot and this was at 100 yards. With this kind of accuracy,  I'm thinking that I am ready for anything from marmonts to moose.
You should have said something; I didn't know I had struck a nerve.

Duckhunter,
I have since been back home for two weeks and today I am back in the desert.  I had a chance to shoot 6 shots from my H&R 20gs ULSH that shares the same barrel you got from me.  I too found the accuracy to be more than adequate. Slugs aren't as hard to find as I thought they would.  Thanks for the offer.  Good luck hunting!

Thanks, Dinny
