225 Winchester chambered in contender
« on: June 25, 2009, 05:42:40 PM »
I have not seen the contender chambered in 225 win. ... is the limiting factor the barrel chamber wall thickness, or the case head thrust ?    Thanks !

One custom barrrel maker has chambered it in the Contender that I know of.    Not a good idea as that counts on the current owner of the barrel knowing to load it down to be safe.

There are lots of factors that are involved that determine max pressure with a particular cartridge, but with the 225 Win a main one is the taper of the case that makes it a no-no on the Contender.   Blow that taper out as in the 226JDJ (and other JDJ's based on this case) and it's not only tame enough for the Contender, it's an excellent choice for it.

YMMV

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I agree with Ladobe. Anything from the factory (assuming you could ever find .225 Win ammo) will be too much for a steady diet in a Contender. There are several chamberings that have been tried that push a 'tender beyond what it should ...nearly anything with a .473" head is too much. But your .225 is an excellent choice assuming you handload and use good sense. I would never sell it off to anyone tho. Make .226JDJ out of it...like the man said.

The .225 WCF actually has a .30-30-sized (0.421") case, so the thrust would be lower than any 0.473" diameter case like the .444-based wildcats.  Still, even that smaller size should never see the pressure that the .225 is loaded to in a Contender, which is over 50,000 CUP from the factory.  For example, SSK chose the .225 case as the basis for many of their smaller wildcats due to its high strength, consistency and small internal diameter to handle higher pressures.

I appreciate the feedback, and I understand why the 225 win is too hot for the contender .... so now my next question is, what 22 cal ( factory or wildcat ) chambering would be "best" (more velocity) in rifle barrel  for contender.  Iwant more velocity than 223 if I can get it.   Thanks !

The .226 JDJ would probably be your best bet.  It's based on the .225 Winchester but has been blown out to increase the grip of the case, which reduces backthrust.  The only other .22 centerfire cartridge I can think of that should give more velocity than the .223 that might be safe in the Contender would be the .222 Remington Magnum.

Right now a 22-204 AI is supposed to be the max for a Contender frame. Got a friend who shoots one....long range.
