I'm just curious for all you reloaders out there.  How long has it been since you have actually seen primers for sale on a store shelf?  I'd really like to load up some ammo, but I haven't seen a small pistol primer in months.  I'd just like to buy a single brick that'll last me a year or two and can't seem to find one.  I've been seeing the rifle prices come down and I've been seeing some of the ammo prices come down, but I still don't see a primer anywhere.  Sure would be nice to find a few though.

Last week I finally saw some Fed 210's.  They wanted $100 a K for them.   ::)

I have not paid over $35.00 for 1000 primers and won't.. Then again I have about 15,000 different primers on hand...

I bought a thousand large rifle in March for $42.

From what I hear the shortages are about over, they're starting to come back again.

Don't recall the specific date but it was last time I was in a gun store. In fact I've yet to go into one locally and find them completely out. Low as compared to times past but never out.

You all are having better luck than I am.  About all I've seen are shotgun primers for muzzleloaders.  I have enough of everything except small pistol primers.  I've had my eyes open for months and still nothing.

when I was at my local gun shop this evening. Lots of rifle and pistol in both large and small.  3 dollars a hundred ot 28 dollars a thousand.  I have lots, so it is not urgent for me to buy.

Local Cabella's hasn't been out of shotgun primers any time I've checked.  2 weeks ago, other local gun store had large rifle bench rest, and about a month ago the same store had large and small pistol and large rifle - can't remember if they had small rifle or not.

Before that it was hit and miss, mostly miss, at either store back to just after the election.

;D We have had shotgun primers on the shelves pretty much all winter. Some stores had both small pistol and large pistol. The thing in short supply was small rifle. Perhaps large rifle also. Just this week, I bought 2000 small rifle for my pal. It was the last they had, but they had been on the shelf for over 10 days, so it looks like the shortage at least here is behind us. Some of the stores only sell 1000. We paid 32.00 for a thousand for these. :-\

Shot gun and pistol primers no problem, stores here have plenty.  Large rifle are a little harder to find, some stores have been out.  Small rifle primers have been in short supply.  One hardware store is getting regular weekly shipments, but they go fast.  One Monday I happened to be there when the shipment rolled out and I bought the entire shipment.  No I'm not hoarding it, that is a normal purchase for me.  Those primers will last me for about 6 months.   They are half gone by now, and I have seven boxes of empty .223 sitting on my reloading bench right now.  Granted hunting season is over for the time being, but it starts up again in six weeks.

The couple of small dealers around here have had some primers in stock all along, but they had some trouble getting the Federals that I use. But I keep a few thousand of each kind on hand for cases like this.

I was at my local shop yesterday to pick up a gun.
I had a shopping list with about 20 items on it and
came out of there with 3 of the items and was
limited to 200 large rifle primers :-\
He is trying to be fair and let everyone he can
have at least a few to be able to shoot.
Also being fair with his prices at $2.50/hundred.
I have about 2000 7.62X39 I want to load and
200 is not going to go far.
I also have a new to me 204 Ruger I want to shoot
but can not find Magnum small riffle primers at all.
I did however score last weekend and bought 1000
Magnum large pistol for $10.00 off an individual ;D

It doesn't seem to be an issue here. I needed some Winchester 209 primers for shotgun a couple of weeks ago and had no trouble finding them at a reasonable price. CCIs are available too.

Wyo. Coyote Hunter:  Every year I get a trapping license.  Under methods and  means of trapping shooting is an option.  I exercise that option.  I shoot Wolves, Coyotes, Foxes, Lynx, Wolverine(Rarely), and Beaver.  Have shot a few Martin (Sable).  I use solid, non-expanding bullets for everything except Wolves and Coyotes.  From October to April I carry .223s.  Contender Pistol, Contender Carbine, 2 Mini-14s, and a H&R Ultra for long shots.  My partner and I also take Ptarmigan with our .223s by shooting them in the head.  We miss far more than we hit.

Also the wife and son like to shoot at local shooting events, and they shoot a lot of .223.

During the winter we go out and call just like you guys do down south.  In the fall calling can get you in trouble, fast.

Has anyone resorted to buying primers online?  I haven't seen a small pistol primer in so long I'm giving it some thought.

;) Sourdough, Thanks for the information. Never thought you would have that much good shooting for .223's. I assume the trouble you would get into calling in the fall is bears. ;D
Teddy, I would hold off on the online stuff, small pistol have been available here most of the winter. I think stuff is going to start becoming more available in the future, but we live in a low population area. I think most guys are caught up here, it may take a bit in large pop. areas. :-X :-[ :-\

I never would have guessed about going through as much 223 in Alaska either, but when it was explained it made sense.

I just looked online, and I jus can't bring myself to pay $40 a box, plus hazmat & shipping.  I've gone so far as to look for primed brass for sale as it seems to be a little bit better, but still way too much.  Talked with two local dealers, and small pistol primers are a distant memory for them as well.  I guess I'll be waiting for a while longer.

 >:( teddy sorry to hear that about primers. we are going fishing up north and maybe into mt. will look around and see what the situation is. as most places small rifle primers seem to be in most demand. as i said bought some for a friend for 32..00 / thousand. limit was 1000 per customer. my girl friend bought a thousand also. but it seems to me there were small pistol on that shelf also. later , i stopped at my supplier and he ask how many primers and what kind i wanted, since i had bought for my pal, i didn't ask more. seemed like he did have a supply. hang in there. :D ;) :) :-X :-[ :-\

Yea, I got 8 lbs plus of assorted powders and 8000 plus of assorted primers on-line. Because of the order size the hazmat fee didn't seem to hurt as much. Now I'm good to go until the availability is back. The prices of the powders and primers were very good, no more than a few years ago, and not at all the present inflated prices.

It seems odd, but what did primers used to sell for in a 1000 pack?  Wasn't it in the low twenties or very high teens?  I don't mind spending another $10 than what something's worth, but I just can't see throwing $20 or $30 away

;)Teddy, This winter I bought some primers at a small grocery store in southern Wy. The stock guns, ammo, and had a few primers. It seems to me I got them for around $23 / thousand. I bought 3 or 4 thousand, some may have been up to 25/1000. When one considers the inflated cost of gas and shipping, 32/1000 doesn't seem too bad here in Wy. where we are a long way from any sources. I used to buy all my primers by the thousand, when I could afford it.  ;)

I always buy primers by the brick (1000) and usually the brick will last me almost a year depending on what kind of rounds I'm loading.  Last time I felt kinda greedy because I bought two bricks of small rifle primers instead of just one.  Now I'm thinking I should try to trade one off.

Wyo. Coyote Hunter,
How far are you away from Jackson Wyoming?  I was there once years ago and I'd love to move there if I could find a job and talk my wife into it.

;) Teddy, I live in south central Wy. about 40 miles from the Colo. boarder. Jackson is in NW Wy. About 300 miles away. I wish it and Colo. were farther from my stomping grounds. Unless you are very wealthy or very skilled living in Jackson is very expensive. The billionaires are driving the millionaires out. Sad, it used to be very beautiful. Now is cluttered with yuppie houses with its citizens largely from Calif. Over the boarder in Driggs, Idaho used to be beautiful farm country with the mts as a back drop. It is now a suburb for people who work in Jackson and cannot afford to live there. Jackson was a small cow town when I first went there 40 years ago. The Calif. found it and the rest is history. :( >:( :P :-[ :-X :-\ :'(

Teddy, a while back there was a news story on one of the national news programs about Pinedale Wy. Pine daile is about 2 hours drive south of Yellowstone. The news story said the town is located on a gas/oil reserver and that the businesses in town couldn't find enough people to hire. I don't know what wages in the area are, but a little research may help. Here is a link you can try if you are interested: http://www.pinedaleonline.com. I would love to move out there, but I like my current job to much and don't want the hassle of dragging the family along and starting over. If I was single...
