Fore end fix for .500 Smith
« on: June 21, 2009, 09:05:09 PM »
Does anyone know of a way to secure a forend other than the original one to this barrel?

I tried to use the Pachmayr forend and even used black silicone rubber to glue it in place and it took 47 shots before it pulled out from the bottom of the barrel (glue and all).  Right now the only thing that I can think of to use is the stock rubber forend as it is light and the inertia will not pull it out.

Just checking to see if anyone else had this problem and the possible cure.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I had a custom rifle barrel that used lugs like the contender.  A factory shotgun forend would then work.  I would think the really light factory rubber foreend should work.

stubshaft, I am curious as to why you are having the trouble you are having.  Is your Pachmayr forend one of the newer "magnum" forends?  That is what I have on my MGM .500 S&W barrel and I haven't had the trouble you are experiencing.   ???

Darrell H,
The stock barrel has a minimal amount of threads because it is so thin.  The thread engagement is only a little more than 1/8".  With the loads that I shoot (36.5 Lil gun behind a 400gr hard cast boolit) it generates ALOT of recoil! and chronographs 1850fps.  I'm going to try to JB Weld a Stratton hangar onto the barrel and mount a laminated forend.  Will let you know if that works.

By the way great looking rig you got there...
