30-06 Encore
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:13:12 AM »
Ok guys my frame will be in this week and my planed set up is a 15" 30-06 barrel with Warne Maxima rings and base with a Nikon Encore scope. What do you guys think? What kind of recoil can I expect with say 150 grain Silvertips?

Sounds like a real nice set up i have been shooting the 308 but just got my 3006 a couple weeks ago and the recoil is about the same. It is a stout recoil but manageable when i went to the bigger calibers i had to learn that for me it seams the recoil is more straight back at me then it was muzzle flip it may be just me but when i changed my grip a little for the recoil to come back at me instead of looking for the muzzle to rise it really helped me out. I think once you shoot it a few time you will really like it but it is not a real good 100 rd at the range type gun either. with the 308 i shot a couple of deer with the 150 gr and lets say there feet are not on the ground for long as long as i do my part.

I have the 308 and the 270 15'' barrels and my experiance is, the lighter the bullet, the lighter the recoil!
I use 150's in the 308 for big game but shoot a lot of 110 V max for fun and varmits. The recoil is noticeable off the bench. When shooting off cross sticks, recoil no longer seems to be a factor for me.
In the 270 I load a lot of 90 grain bullets but for hunting I use 130 grain Nosler balistic tip bullets.
I still want a 30-06 cause my dad left me a lot of ammo but the 308 is pretty good for almost everything I hunt. My 2 cents,

If your heart is set on the 30-06 then get it, but if you are not set on that round then consider the 308. The 308 and 30-06 are about the same up until you get to the 180 gr bullets and above then the 06 will have a very slight edge.  the 30-06 will burn more powder, have more muzzle flash and more recoil then the 308.
