If you're waiting to buy a car that gets 22 mpg or more, it may be a good idea to wait until the newly passed multi-billion dollar boondoggle goes into effect. You could, for example, buy an old junk pickup truck for next to nothing, then trade it in for the $4500 incentive.

Haven't thought about that.  Good idea.  First they take our tax money to take over GM and Chrysler.  Now they will give us money to buy one of the Government Motors cars.

If that is your intent better get that clunker now, cause the price of all used vehicles now has a $3500 floor. This feels real good now, but going into the future it can't help but be a bad idea. Is everyone ready to buy the kid a really nice car to learn in? Are those "urban" single mothers suddenly going to be able to afford a beater car in the $4000 range?

Does any one foresee the dealer marking up the new cars a comenserate amount? When loan rates dropped to %0 the out the door cost of a vehicle changed very little for most consumers. If it makes you feel better think of the pride you will feel when your neighbor drives up in that new car, and your take home pay has fallen $10 bucks to help him out.

 I WANT MY FREE CRAP TOO, I WANT A FREE GUN, I WANT A FREE ELK HUNT, I WANT MY MTV. Matter of fact I'm sick and tired of working 74 hrs a week so I can get the things I "deserve". Somebody owes me the American Dream and I want it right now. Take 34 hrs out of my work week and I would have time to watch more TV and shop at WalMart, that would stimulate the economy alright.

Put me down on the I don't approve list.

There are a few more details than that.

The old car has to be a 1984 model or newer.
The old car to get less than 22mpg.
The new car has to cost less than $45000
If the new car gets 4mpg more than the clunker, you qualify for a $3500 voucher.
If the new car gets 10mpg more than the clunker, you qualify for a $4500 voucher.

If you are dealing with Trucks under 6000lbs, the old truck must get less than 18mpg.  The $3500 and $4500 voucher require improvements of 2mpg and 5mpg respectively.

For trucks between 6000 and 8000lbs, the old truck must get less than 15mpg.  The $3500 and $4500 voucher require improvements of 1mpg and 2mpg respectively.

These numbers were in a report of the bill about a week ago.  There may be even more number changes now that it passed.

Found out you have to have the car you trade in for at least a year.  If someone has a car that old, they probably can't afford car payments anyways.  This is like when they had a gun buy back in some town and were giving $200 a gun.  Some guy went and bought 7 $59 guns and sold them for $200 each.  Lots of people were doing this so they quit the program because they were getting ripped off.

We are not buying a new car, probably ever...but if we did it would not be a company owned by the government...so I'm not helping there at all.  There are plenty of good used cars on the market that will get me from point A to point B...and your right...you won't be getting so great a deal on a trade in anyways, they will find a way to get their money.  Sounds to me like they just figured out most people ain't going to be buying cars and they are trying to jump start that with these voucher things.  I'm content to watch them all fall on their butts no matter what they do.  My money is getting piled up if we can,  not spending...until they stop spending.  That's my way of hurting them....and it's working quite well. 
We stay home all them time and live cheap and enjoy life, and enjoy watching them scratch for our money.
For the people that have any money at all...hang on to it and live cheap...it's hurting them worse than you know.  And they know it...

From the looks of it any money you save on the klunker rebate will be needed to pay legal fees interpreting the law.

One thing I'm concerned about is whether parts will continue to be available for cars that get less that 22mpg. Any word on that?
