Author Topic: Deer Roast in crock pot recipes anyone? (Read 3170 times)

I've got a roast that I'd like to cook up in the crock pot. Do any of you have any suggestions on the best way to do this? I'm a complete rookie with a crock pot and a novice with deer meat in general.

Water half way up the roast, 4tbs of garlic salt, 4tbs of seasoning salt, and 4tbs of black pepper!!! let it cook all day. make brown gravey out of the broth using cornstarch and make the most tasty hot DEER sandwichs you ever had!!!!!

pour in water until its up about one and a half inches then sprinkle one package of Lipton onion soup mix on top of roast, maybe a little in the water. Cook time depends on size of roast. If frozen it might take five or six hours. If you cook in oven buy one of the roasting bags and add one package of Lipton onion soup mix and any vegtables you like. You also need a pan of cornbread to go with it. Talk about some good eatin! Jenks

Well, Saturday was the big day.... My wife left the house with a certain worried look in her eye because she knew what I was planning on... cooking in her clean kitchen! I put the frozen roast into the crock pot, with one tablespoon of about everything I liked mixed in with a cup and a half of water (way too much), 3 cut up potatoes, and a handful or two of carrots. After several hours I got most of the water out, but by the tiem it was all over I had removed 3 cups of water.

By the time it was all said and done, I was one happy and full little piggie. It was delicious and I couldn't have hoped for anything better. Much more importantly my wife really liked it! I'm working hard to get her to like the meat so I get to hunt more. So far, I'm doing alright. Man that was good!

Teddy; Sounds to me like you did an outstanding job on the roast. My wife always tells me that one drinking glass full of water is enough. I mix my seasoning mix (one pkg. of Lipton onion soup mix) in the glass of water and pour in crock over the meat. Does not matter weather deer or beef. Add taters, carrots and anything else. Jenks

It was good left over last night too! I'm going to have a really hard time letting anything walk on by this fall, because I'm really deviloping a taste for deer.

I do the roast almost like beef only difference is sprinkling instant coffee on the top, the tannins in the instant granules breaks down the toughness and in some manner chemicly kills the funkie taste this method has worked well on winter Harvisted Moose (kids wouldent touch the stuff cooked anyother way) look up wildgame cooked useing instant coffee its interesting method to make game meat less gamey!
This method works great on Bearded seal and the few times I tried it on Bowhead Whale the folks couldent figurer what it was.

The Lipton onion soup mix works very well (haven't used on venison, but have on beef), especially if you also add a pack of dry brown gravy mix. Couple of cups of water (gravy mix will soak up a good bit), salt, pepper to taste, and potatoes, carrots, whole onions (whatever you like). Mmmmm, getting hungry.

Listen to swampman. I also like to put about a half a cup of Franks red hot and a half a cup of cider vinegar and cook that down and pull it apart for sandwiches. Don't be afraid to add more Franks, honestly isn't that hot but plenty of flavor.

Here is my favorite.. I haven't tried it in the crock pot, but works well in the oven and I used a roasting pan. I bet you could ball up some foil and do the same in the crock.
day 1 soak in red wine
day 2 soak in butter milk save the marinate (butter milk knocks out some of the game taste)
wrap in bacon and roast around 350
make gravy out of the drippings.... Sometime I add a little extra juice from the marinate.
I usually serve it with fried potatoes/onions, and green beans

several of you mentioned gameytasting deer meat. If you head shoot them and get them hung up and skinned out and gutted right away. Then cooled out quick you won't have that gamey taste.

Ever watch the process at a slaughterhouse? They don't shoot em several times running them around the field. And then drag them through the dirt after gutting them. And then hang them in a tree with the hide on to "age the meat".

Take care of that meat after you kill that deer with a CNS shot and you'll be suprised how the flavor of the meat improves. JMO

I have heard many guys say they let their deer hang for a few days to a week. I ask them if they would hang a piece of beef in a tree for that long. It amazes me the people that think its ok to leave the hide on a deer and hang it outside for a few days in 50 or 60 degree weather. These are the same people that say they don't like the taste of deer meat.
As soon as I get a deer its hung in the shed and the hide is taken off. This is much easier done when the deer is still warm, and it lets it cool quicker. If its warm I quarter it and stick in in a fridge, until I cut it up.

I have a crock pot recipe that I do with a beef roast that has a lot of flavor. I have never tried a deer roast with this recipe. When I cut a deer up its all steaks chops and burger. A deer roast may taste fine doing it this way.

Sear outside of roast in a pan on the stove. Then place in crock pot.
Add one can of cream of mushroom soup diluted with water. I usually mix the soup and water in a bowl first.
1 pkg. of lipton dry onion soup mix.
1 can of coke or cola. Cook on high for 8 hrs. Its simple and easy, but has a lot of flavor. It also makes enough gravy for mashed potatoes.
With a beef roast you won't need a knife to cut it.

I'm sorry jenkst, but I'm really tired of all the lipton onion soup recipes. It's mixed with everything . Rabbit, Squirel, Racoon, Opossum, Deer , Turkey, Pheasant, Grouse, Woodchuck,Potaoe chip dip, and the worst of all.....burgers.....etc.etc.etc. Where does it end?
can't we come up with something else? I HATE ONION SOUP MIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I'm a fan of onion soup mix, because it stores well, I've used sweet onions only in crock pot deer roasts. I love the Vadalia onions, and you could easily mix them with vegetable broth to add to the crock pot. This would also eliminate the MSG, that is often an ingredient in dry soup mixes, something that some people are sensitive or allergic to.

V8 juice . Put 2 cans of V8 juice in with roast cook all day . Add taters , onions, carrots and anything else you like a couple hours before you plan to serve . You may have to add water but don't add more than needed . Serve with bread and tea .
