Question
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:42:56 PM »
I called the T/C Custom Shop to order my .338 Federal barrel in stainless 26in and the lady told me 14-16 weeks(I knew this ahead of time) BUT then she said if I want the Prohunter barrel in 338 Federal she could ship it today.
My question is how much heavier is the Prohunter 28in fluted barrel to a 26in tapered encore barrel. I can live with the extra 2in but do not want much more weight!!!
Any help or advice is appreciated.

I think if it is fluted the weight wouldn't be a whole lot different!!!

Even if it isn't fluted, 2 extra inches of barrel won't make much difference in weight.

I have Encore rifle barrels in 24, 26 and 28 inch lengths and, given the choice you were given, I would go with the Prohunter 28 inch barrel.

I don't know about availability but you might also consider a non custom shop barrel.  I have a couple of tapered 24 inchers with iron sights that I like.  All you do is put a Warne Maxima base on the barrel and use Warne QD rings and if you ever need the irons, you can easily take the scope off to do so or switch scopes between barrels.  I've found the accuracy from the tapered, heavy and Prohunter barrels to be pretty good in all.

I bought my new pro hunter with a 28 in 243 barrel but never cared for it after doing some shooting, sold it and got a 24 inch tapered and found it to handle much better. Now all my barrels are 24 inch. There is some differance in weight but not bad but you can feel it. I found for my type hunting that the 24 inch pointed quicker.

The Prohunter barrel is a heavy taper that is fluted while the other barrel is just a plain taper so there is a weight difference BUT do not know if the fluting negates the extra weight.

I do seem to agree with Deacon. I have a 26in tapered barrel that is very light and points nicely--I may be forced to wait the 14 weeks from the custom shop. Two inches in length and a few ounces may not seem like much but when you are crawling thru a swamp and lugging it around all day-------It makes a difference

Thanks to everyone for the help
