Remington 62gr CTFB 223

I have some rem. 62 gr CTFB (closed tip flat base ) bullets that shoot well in my223 handi. This morning I shot a rabbit at about 35yds and it blew an exit hole the size of a softball. I had thought that  they where the same as FMJs. Does anyone know the difference between CTFB and FMJ ? If any. Thanks

Man, that avatar of yours is gross beyond words. Looks like bullet expansion media for testing RP 62 grain CTFP!  >:(

At the velocity of the .223 and at the range you indicated, any bullet is going to ruin a rabbit with a body hit. Better to aim for the head with these if your wanting to salvage any of the meat.

     When the .223 was first developed for military use the idea was to take a small bullet at high velocity and over stabilize it so that when it hit something the bullet would begin to yaw and tumble. that's how in the early days of the M-16 people would say that the bullet tumbles in flight. It would, after a fashion but only after it hit something.
  Velocity aside at 35 yards that could still have been what happened with your round. Hard to say. The real question is, how accurate is the round?

Just because a bullet is a closed tip or a hollow point or a soft point or any other type of point how it acts has a lot to do with other factors.  Take a look at the pictures below, these are 100 yard shots with a .17 cal hollow point, bet you didn't think it would act like this.  Larry

Larry, thats exactly what happened for me with the Speer HP's in the 17HMR. Always cut holes like a laser. Now the V-Maxs were a different story.
