What can be done to make raising the bolt (cocking the mechanism) easier.New gun Predator 243 Caliber. Haven't fired it yet but firing is not going to help this, it is too too hard. Hoping some one will have an easy remedy for this. I hate to ship it back to Savage. Thanks

I may be mistaken but you'll either need to add a lift kit (which I hear doesn't help much) or time and true the action.

Contact either Kevin Rayhill at Stockade gunstocks or Fred Moreo at SSS and they will set ya straight!

Try lots and lots of dry firing or cycling the action. If that doesn't work get a longer bolt handle. The extra leverage will make a big differance. All of my Savages have been a little stiff at first, but have gotten better with time.

I did have a Savage target action timed and tuned by Fred at SSS. He does excellent work. But unless you have the $120 just sitting around, spend the money on a longer bolt handle. It will work just as well once the gun is broke in.

Good Advice - I put on the BT style bolt handle on both of my Stevens 200's. Not only does it feel better in my hand, it does give you more leverage, making it feel smoother.

It cocks on opening via the cam at the rear of the bolt.  When a bolt is "timed" the cam is modified so that is doesn't over lift the hammer and is also smoothed out.  You could take the bolt apart and polish up the part of the cam that the cocking piece slides on, that and some good moly grease there should help you out a lot.  Larry

Buff,

Did you ever try polishing/lubing the cam?  If so, did it help?  Mine is tough to open too.
