A 20-30 for a Handi?
« on: June 13, 2009, 07:27:13 PM »
I've been working on another rifle project, a Steyr straight pull bolt with a 20 cal barrel.  I've formed up some 30-30 brass necked down to .20 cal, this should feed through the clip or magazine whatever you call the steyr feed system.  Seems to me that it could be just the thing for a really hot re-chamber of a .204 Handi, kind of makes me wish I hadn't sold my .204 Handi barrel.  As soon as I get the brass forming totally figured out I will get a reamer ground and see how it runs.  If it is good it could be a really cool Hand  rimmed round for a nice wildcat.  Guess it would be called a 20-30?  Larry

If this is gonna be a wildcat, you might as well improve it, look at all the extra recoil and muzzle blast you could get by moving that case wall up!

Another rimmed cartridge??  Heck yeah! lol

I'd do as tykempster mentioned though, do a 40 degree shoulder.  Higher capacity and/or less pressure, less case stretching, etc.

For ease of forming I kept the same sholder angle as the 30-30 parent case.  Case capacity is 36 gr of water to the bottom of the neck.  Larry

Yep;

40 degree, or that case will grow & grow. I hope you like case trimming.

It's close to a necked down 219 Zipper.  I need it as long as practical so it will feed from the clip.  I have already modified the bolt head and extractor, something that would not need to be done on a Handi.  I really should have kept my Handi 204 barrel, but then this will be fun also.  I have a .204 Remington takeoff barrel that I have threaded for the Steyr action.  It should be a fairly hot little load I think.  Larry

With a 40 degree shoulder you should gain a ton of capacity and less case stretch.  Would look like a totally more cooler cartridge.  ;D
