BEAR Barrel

Got an itch for a new barrel :-\
I have 11, should think that would be enough :D
Yea Right :'(
Right now I am using a 14" 30-30 Bull for stand hunting
black bear but think I may want a little more knock down power.
I am not a rich man so would need to find a factory Contender
round that would do a "Bang/Flop" on a bear at around the 50 yrd range
without smashing my forehead and bad shoulder in the process.
I will be leaving it open sited because of range and thick cover.
I think a 14" bull would be my choice in configuration.
Lets hear what you have to say.

That's easy,

375 JDJ

You can load it down if it's bothersome to your shoulder (I can't help you with your forehead -?-). TC did chamber some in factory barrels, dunno if they still do or not?

still fairly common round

lots of relaoding options.....including 357 slugs

A 45 Colt in a 14" barrel will drop a black bear out to 50+ yds.  T/C did make some, just be sure it's not the 45/410 barrel as they are inherently in 45 due to the long chamber for the 410.  You can load from cowboy action to Ruger hot.  A good muzzle brake will protect the forehead from the hotter loads and the 45 seems to kick less than the 44 to me.

The .44 Magnum will be superior to any pressure-tested .45LC load, and you can buy factory ammo if you choose.  The .445 SuperMag is even stouter but is not factory offered now.  A 14" .44 Mag will plant any black bear walking without killing the shooter in the process.

The Contender can handle higher pressure .45 Colt ammunition than what the factories load for.  A few companies make this type of .45 Colt ammo (Buffalo Bore comes to mind), and it can be handloaded.  Most reloading manuals have a ".45 Colt for Ruger, T/C, and Freedom Arms firearms only" section.

So, you can, if you have the right gun, load the .45 Colt to do anything the .44 Magnum will do.  Doing so will also make the .45 Colt as loud as the .44 Mag, and it will kick just as hard, too.

Keep it coming.
Right now I am leaning towards 45 Colt
because I have Dies and brass but that is not
a good enough reason for me not to get something else.
I guess It will come down to is a barrel coming available
in some of the above mentioned calibers or yet to come up.

I've used Ruger-level loads in my .45LCs for over 30 years with fine success, but the fact is that published tested load data - the only type allowed on this site - still does not equal .44 Magnum published loads.  I love my .45LCs - all five of them - but they are not the best choice for everyone.

Since the OP likes the .45LC then he can go for it, but IMO he'd be better off going with the .44 Magnum.  With the latter he will get better performance without having to "wing it" to try to get close to .44 power.  More data, more safety margin in the T/C, easy to get ammo and more modern chamber dimensions.  Only one of my T/C chambers is small enough to handle Ruger-level loads, the rest are oversize.  Others have the same issue unless we go to custom barrels (which I have).  The .44 is still chambered and has correct chamber dimensions.

i  cut my handi rifle  from  22 to  16 inches

chronographed 2 loads  befor and after

both  lost approx.     100  fps

that   is  a real  bear round  too
just seems like  a lot of case for the small barrel
the case  takes  up  13% of the barrel

i  like the  44 mag  in a handi or a revolver

444 i never shot but  might be good too

remember  bears  and pigs  are  a great excuse  to buy  a bigger than you need gun

Just to mix things up more how about the 358 JDJ, it's my favorite of the JD's bigones.
as flexable as the 35 rem but with a rim. Lots of 35 rem rechambers out there, (I believe JD Jones won't rechamber the 375 win barrels). More bullet options than the 375 as well.

Yep, with the right load, the .45-70 gives quite a bit more power than the .375JDJ. I'm not disrespecting the .375JDJ, both rounds pack more power than most of us really need, but the .45-70 is a thumper! I get 1890 fps with a 300 gr Partition in a 14" barrel. Strong bear medicine!

    For a bang/flop on a bear at 50 yd out of a factory Contender barrel, I just can't imagine anything better than a 45-70.  I forget that the .375JDJ is now a factory offering and it's total energy is higher than the 45-70, but the "smack'm effect" with a LBT style 405gr hard cast bullet would just have to be LARGE.  Besides, if you've got 11 barrels and don't have a 45-70, you owe yourself one....It's just plain FUN!!!

Wanna see what $2500 worth of JDJ's look like though?  Here's a picture on the day they were delivered of the last mini collection of JDJ's I bought as a 4 barrel deal back in '04.  Ed got them for me and I got a great price on them as a set.   Notice which one had a scope already mounted that very first day so it could do range time.    None of the other scopes would mount with the full length T'SOB and T'SOB rings (objective bells too large to clear the vent rib) and I didn't have rings that would clear them on hand.  IOW, none of all the other JDJ's I had ever owned had the full length rib, so I was kind of caught with my pants down.   Anyway pard you're too late... all 4 have already been sold.   Only HC I have left is the Bullberry 6.5 Super Bower, and except for a 222 and .410 all the remaining barrels I have left are 17 caliber (both factory and custom wildcats).
