Weapon used in Museum Shooting "too old"
« on: June 12, 2009, 04:30:22 PM »
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- It is not possible for authorities to trace the rifle used in this week's shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to the original purchaser, a law enforcement source said Friday.

The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation, said the weapon is a Winchester Model 6, .22 caliber rifle -- a type of gun manufactured between 1908 and 1928 -- long before records were kept on gun purchases.

Authorities also were checking to see if the weapon had been used in any other crime, the source said."

I suppose a reasonable and fair solution to this clear loophole in our nation's gun laws would be to have all old weapons turned in for serialization and registration. They should probably all be stamped with a legal disclaimer, and retrofitted with safety features ... all at owner expense. Or just simply smelted as they do in the more civilized societies of Europe.  ::)

Unless rabbit and squirrel hunting is illegal somewheres, I can't imagine a Model 6 having too checkered a past.

I knew he must have used something ordinary because the media Nazis's aren't talking about the weapon.

Maybe it's a case of a dumb crook who didn't realize the guards there were armed. Library of Congress had some armed guards the last time I was there.

I had been to the Library before 9/11 and then about six years later. Before 9/11 I used to be able to just walk in and go inside to request books to read. Now you have to pass a metal detector and guards, and you need a special picture ID just to go into where you can request books. I'd say the 9/11 attack was very darned effective, just judging by the security levels now.

I'm sure relieved it wasn't one of those "assault types". Now THAT would have fed the frenzy.

Not to make light of this, but wouldn't it have been some show if this guy rolled up with a Civil War Cannon behind his car and let fly at Congress. :-\

Actually, I think if it had been a Luger with a swastika on the grips, we'd be hearing a lot more about it.

The old guy probably was the original purchaser.

That ol' Winchester probably has a long and sorted history of death and destruction.  It probably has accounted for at least several hundred squirrel fatalities alone not to mention the numerous crows, rats and other vermin it has most likely been used against.
