bought a savage tonight
« on: June 12, 2009, 12:24:58 PM »
bought a savage 10 package with the wood stock and accutrigger and scope.

it was $295 at the gunshop. i am not sure what these go for used, but this is like new, seemed like a decent deal.

i have some loads ready for it with the 85 grain sierra hollowpoint and 60 grain sierras. any recommendations from the savage lovers?

Is it a Winchester 243? $300 is not a bad deal at all, especially if the scope is a good one. What kind of suggestions are you looking for?

You still haven't confirmed the caliber.

I have a 110 .243 that doesn't dislike anything.  I've shot from 58gn Vmax up to 100 grain Corelokts with pretty much the same awesome results.  A bad group for the rifle is 1" for 4 rounds.  I've got several 3 shot cloverleafs or ragged holes with a flyer for the fourth opening the group up to a tidy .75".  This is without having ever doen anything more than mounting a scope, no bedding of the stock, to truing of the action (Savages usually don't benefit much from that anyway thanks to the bolt head design) and the stock old style trigger with its heavy (but crisp) pull.

Mine likes 100 grain partitions for deer. I soot light speer varminters for grundhogs, sometimes. All of my Savages shoot much better than some of my more expensive "premium factory guns". Great choice.

I dont like to list actual loads, beacuse my typing is terrible, and I dont want a misprint. Try the Lyman manual, or Nosler. They list some good starting points.

62 grain varmint grenades with the starting load of Reloader 19 using Win cases and primers has been my favorite.  Also like the 58gn Vmax over IMR 4895.  Lots of people swear by Varget but I've not been able to find any in the time that I've been reloading.  The lack of shops stocking reloading supplies here in Vegas doesn't help.

varget has been my go-to for .22-250, .243, .25-06, and .223, all with certain bullets.

i keep trying other powders but i keep coming back to varget...try it out if you can.

thought this rifle had rust on the bolt...its GREASE. this gun hasn't even been wiped clean of the packing stuff they put on these rifles.

it looks like it has been fired...but not a nick on it and i cannot imagine someone putting more than a box or two through it, in the condition it's in.

shoot, i will probably nick it more shooting once than it has on it now. guess i got a good deal. i looked them up today online and a new one would be $565 or so.

That sounds like a good deal. I went out today looking for a used Savage to use as a donor action. No luck though.

The Savage 243 Win that I had worked well with 100gr Grand Slams and H4350. This load was usually good for .75" at 100yds. It did give me one spectacular .8 group at 200yds. Must have been a fluke though because I was never able to do it again. Makes me wonder why I don't still have that rifle.
