870 forend wrench

Does anyone know where I can get the special wrench that's needed to remove the forend from the slide on and 870? I'm looking at getting one of the new ShurShot stocks for my gun. Also, does anyone have one of these stocks and what are your thoughts on them? Thanks.

You can get one of the wrenches from Brownell's.  I think the "Gun Runners" brand is probably the least expensive.  I have the ShurShot stock and fore-end on my turkey/slug gun and really like it.  Good luck.

I have never seen the need for a special wrench to remove the forearm, always used my fingers or a pair of pliers wrapped in a rag so I dont bigger up the knurling. Am I missing something?

Plus one here, and have been working on and rebuilding them for over 35 years. Folks have always been satisfied with my work, and always pay. What if they find out I never owned this special wrench. Besides, why would you tighten it up that tight?

If it's the nut I'm thinking about, I use the tips of a pair of needle nose plyers.

I just used the tips of some needle nose pliers and the nut came off without a problem. That's 20 some dollars I don't have to spend now. Thanks!

Glad the pliers worked.  I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago who had just come back from the emergency room getting 6 stitches in his hand from trying to do the same thing.  I feel like the convenience of the wrench is well worth the $20.

What was the guy doing, trying to get the nut off with a pocket knife. The nut should never be much more than hand tight in the first place.
Worst case scenario, one could take a pair of CHANNEL LOCKS and gently locke the whole thing in a vice to losen the nut.
Six stitches while getting a nut off the slide of an 870 Remington? Sounds like that guy needs to stay away from ANY KIND of tool. Including small hammers.

You can't get a pair of channel locks on this nut.  It's up inside the wood.

Well now that's very odd Swampy, as I am sitting in my office at this very moment looking a TWO, YES TWO, 870 Remington shotguns, and I could easily take the foreend nut off either with a set of Channel Locks if I needed to. AND! I wouldn't have to open the slide to move the WOOD out of the way either.

You need to stay with what you know Swampy. If you ever find out what it is. ;)

If you remove the foreend from the shotgun, you still have to get the action bars out of the wood.  Up inside the wood, there is a castellated nut that takes a spanner wrench or the tips of a pair of needle nosed plyers if it isn't too tight.  You unscrew that nut and if you're lucky, the metal tube will slide out of the forend.  Then you install the new foreend and reinstall the nut.

I think some on here are confusing the barrel retaining nut with the forend tube assembly nut ( Don't know what Rem actually calls those).

I made my own wrench by finding and appropriate thickness and width piece of flat bar ( I believe I had to do a small amount of grinding for the right width) and clamping it in a vise.   I then just insert the forend down on the end of the flatbar and engage the two notches and turn.
