Steyr Prohunter 450 Marlin??
« on: June 08, 2009, 02:08:19 AM »
Saw this model when I was trawling through the local distributors website.
Has anyone handled or shot a Prohunter in 450 Marlin?
In a Marlin Guide Gun they have to keep 450 Marlin loads sub-40,000psi but in a Prohunter the sky's the limit.
I reckon this could be a real stealth bomber.
Mild loads for normal work and then wind it up for buffalo busting.
Plus Steyrs are really good rifles.
Any help?

The Steyr Mannlicher Big Bore with a 22" barrel is the current version chambered for the 450 Marlin.  It is available with the HC-Kit for a 7+1 magazine capacity which when fully loaded would add considerably to its 8.4 lbs. weight.  The SAAMI pressure specification for the 450 Marlin is 43,500 PSI and it can be loaded to this level in the Marlin 1895 rifles chambered for it.  In a modern bolt action it is likely that one could take the 450 Marlin up near 65,000 PSI, although developing loads for such a combination would be the realm of the experimenter.

No I don't have one, but they do appear interesting.  I have a Steyr Prohunter 338 Fed and like it a lot.  Watch GunBroker, they come up once in a while.  I don't remember what they have brought, but sometimes the Steyrs go very reasonable.  The 376s in particular seem cheap.

Well, that idea just got the shaft.
I rang my fave gunshop in Sydney and got a quote:

  • Prohunter in 243/270/308/30-06 = AUD$1710
  • Prohunter in 450 Marlin = AUD$2550!!!  :o :o >:( :'(

You have to wonder how much more it costs to make the 450 than it does to make the 308 or 270.
I'm guessing the extra cost is zero.  :(

I saw a Rem model 7 in w/ a 450 marlin bbl on it.  It was on Gunbroker too.  Seller stated it started out as a 300 SAUM.  In the USA the 7 can be pretty reasonable in price and $600 for a high quality rebarrel.

sounds good to me.  What don't sound good is the $2500 part.  Well to each his own. Bill439

I've seen the Steyr Pro Hunter in 450 Marlin for $1200 in the US.

Welcome to the horror of exchange rates and local distributor profiteering.
Y'know, I should stop looking on gunbroker.
It just makes me cry.
I looked at the Buy It Now price of a Steyr 450 there and it was only AUD$100 more than the 270s and 308s here.
Wish we could ship guns easily like we used to.
Now the paper work is more trouble than it's worth.
One shop I heard of was tacking over US$300 on top of the postage for anything they shipped overseas.
"Processing costs" apparently.
Thank you, 911.   >:(
And Australia was one of the few countries that went into Iraq with the USA!

I have been loading for a Guide Gun in .450 for years, and it will do anything that I could ever ask on this continent. Ilove the round, but for a bolt gun, and more power, why not a .458 WIN ? I mean, from my perspective, if I need more power than I can get from my Guide Gun, I'm going after African dangerous game, and would step up to a magmum of some sort, but that's just me

The .376's are may be cheap to buy, but they will hammer a pig FLAT in a hurry.  I really like mine except that the 270's kick too much for my bad shoulder from the bench.  They don't hurt much at all while standing.  I like the prohunter platform.  Kinda different looking but it works well.
