Model 93 R17
« on: June 07, 2009, 04:53:23 PM »
I have been looking at this rifle for a while. This is the BTV model which has the laminated thumbhole stock with an accutrigger and has a blued bull barrel. MSRP IS $400 and lowest price I can find is in the $350 range. Dick's Sporting goods has the this rifle with a scope (not sure what brand) on sale for $299. I have heard a lot of positive reveiws with this rifle. My question is has anyone had any experience with the Model 93's? Accuracy and range wise what should I expect out of this rifle? I would appreciate any input anyone could give.

Moss - I've had a 93 Savage, stainless "bull" BBL for 2 years now and would not part with it. And this comes from a guy that never thought the .17HMR would ever sell or be useful enough to warrant paying for the more expensive cartidges.
It is as accurate as the best of my .22LR rifles (Kimber included) and flater shooting than a .22Mag. Mine has the "cheaper" synthetic stock and I mounted a "Dusk-to-Dawn" Bushnell scope with Millett rings.  Whether you prefer the higher priced "thumb-hole" stock, or any configuration in-between, you cannot go wrong with the 93 Savage IMHO.
I just got back from shooting prairie dogs in South Dakota and the "Hummer" killed as many "dogs" as my centerfires and was more fun to shoot off an ATV. (Wind is a factor with the little "pill", but not as bad as a .22Mag and much better than a .22LR.

I have a pre accutrigger 93 in 22 mag. Very accurate rifle. I won't part with it.

Howdy,
I've had two experiences with the Savage M93. My wife gave me a 17HMR for Christmas shortly after they came on the market. This was a complete surprise to me because I first unwrapped a box of Hornady .17HMR ammo, and was wondering how she had found out about the Contender barrel that I had won on eBay! Turned out she had the long box back behind some stuff. You had to be there.
I mounted a 4-12x44 scope on the supplied Weaver bases and I was off to the races. The trigger was so stiff that I could see the sights shift at the break. I then installed a Riflebasix trigger and it now is almost too easy to hit charcoal briquettes at any range.
The second M93 was a pre-Model 40 chambered in .22 Hornet that I set up for my father. Same deal- The trigger was a little harsh, so I dropped another Riflebasix into it and it is a tack-driver. I tested and broke in the barrel using a Bushnell 3-9X40 scope, and it was putting three shots into 1/2" @ 100 yards.
The secret to these seems to be the great Savage barrel coupled with a long, stiff action. The barrel is fully floated and about a quarter of the length is held in the action itself. Tall rings must be used for a 40mm scope bell to clear the forward part of the action. THAT'S how long the action is! I have only dry-fired the accutrigger, but the package has been improved with that addition. You are getting a lot of rifle for the money.
One caveat: Consider cleaning the bore. Have you ever run a wet patch down the bore of a .17? Patch thickness is super critical and it is the most hair-pulling cleaning job I've ever encountered. My next M93 will be a .22 Magnum.

Good luck!

The only problem I have with mine is the price for extra mags and there are no hi-cap mags. Other then that I love it. Now I might have more problems once my kids start shooting, but oh well. 8)
