How many shorten stocks?
« on: June 05, 2009, 06:51:46 PM »
For length of pull? That 14.25 factory size is a stretch for this short stocky feller.
I've done a few butt pad jobs for my son, easy enough with a Limbsaver Grind to Fit. I put a pistol grip standard stock on his sb1 20ga cut it too 12.5 LOP.
I'm also a BP fan and have inlet butt plates, so I'm no stranger to a saw and tools, but that Monte Carlo on my sb2 has me stumped, is there an after market flat plate available to replace that 1" thick rubber butt?
Or should I swap it out for a standard and cut that? This frame will be for .223 and 7-08 so i won't need alot of help with cushion for kick.  ???

something to think about...I grew up reading Bob Milek and agree with his ideas pertaining to hunting rifles and recoil pads/butt plates...if you are gonna hunt with this rifle it needs a recoil pad...there comes a time hunting when you might lean your rifle against a tree,a stump,or something like that for various reasons. If your gun has a metal butt plate and you bump it on a rock or something hard putting it down it will go "clunk",making a noise that is not a normal woods noise. Most deer that hear a funny noise in the woods beat it for some woods with more familiar noises

I tried removing the recoil pad and fitting a butt plate but it just didn't make that looong Handi stock short enough...  :(  'sides, I NEED a recoil pad on my 45-120 so I cut the stock back enough that it ended up at 13.25 inches with the limbsaver installed.  That is my I preferred length.

I'm fixin to cut back the laminated thumbhole stock on another Handi but I will refit the existing thin hard rubber pad.  It's a 7x57 so recoil isn't an issue.   ;D

Well thanks Tim, but you can remove the link for the butt plate at Brownells, They don't stock it anymore.( I could get one that say's Winchester/Remington or Stevens) The sticky does give another idea or two though.
The lady's/youth stock is sized for 11 1/2" LOP, and that's a might short. I'm about the same as Atlaw needing tween' 13-13.25 for a decent fit. If I cut the Monte back that much, it's into the drop of the high comb at the butt and I think that would just plain ruin the whole thing the Monte has going for it. I could just reshape the comb and butt to the same lines, but with all the other irons I have in the fire I wasn't looking for a full "stock re-finshing" job just now. I guess I'll look around for a pallet pistol grip standard and cut that'n back.
Thanks for the return's,, I'm still open to any other idea's

They still sell one for H&Rs, just not at that link which is old which I corrected, this one is in stock, at least it says it's in stock when I put one in my basket.

Thanks guy's for the link's. I'll get the one from numrich only because it has listed known measurments that will fit. It'll actually be long, but I can grind to fit :).
:-[  As an exersize in humility,, I must tell ya I spent about an hour cruising both of those sites and couldn't find what I needed  :-\ ::). Now if'n they was parts for a trad Black Powder gun,,,it's actually been about 25 yrs since I picked up a centerfire and I'm re-learning the learning curve, but the boy is 16 now and it's my duty to introduce him to the modern stuff. Besides these thing's are kinda fun, all ya gotta do is open it up and plug one in and close it, plus ya still git to fiddle with and tune it, dial it in for that all critical "one shot".

p.s. I finally figured out that Ctrl F thing,, the info in the FAQ's is now much easier to find!
